injector pump

Just had a rebuilt injector pump put in my 2003 Jetta TDI 1.9. I took it out for a spin after getting it from the mechanic. The first thing I noticed was that the engine rpm's were going up and down while it was idling. I killed the engine to go into a local store. Was gone 5 minutes. Got back in the car and drove toward the house. The engine acted as if it was starved for fuel while I was accelerating. When I got home, I put it in reverse (5 speed, standard) and released the clutch and the engine died. I popped the hood and looked at fuel line to see if I could see any air in line. The fuel line was extremely hot. I let it cool for 90 minutes and it started up immediately. But I did notice the new pump was very hot when I touched it after the engine ran for a few minutes. Are these pumps supposed to get too hot to touch?

Deeleecee, Did you find a solution to your issue? Also, I belive you posted a new thread in the root forum to answer Vince Waldon'as question.

Who replaced the pump and did they properly time the pump?

I doubt the OP is coming back to see what the responses might be. Likely he solved the problem or there really wasn't a problem.

Vegged-out, maybe I do not know anything about the IPs on ALH engines, but the ones I've been into are basically the same as the old style pumps. Mechanically, they are either in time or they are not. If they are not mechanically in time, well, the engine will not start. The owner would time it by adjusting the position of the Cog with the use of VCDS once it is installed (I'm sure you know that). It would be interesting to know what the IP was doing that the OP thought it needed to be rebuilt.

Tell me what I am missing.

Coming in late but almost all pumps will need to have IQ adjusted after reseal/rebuild after installed.
