I love the old union station pic. Nobody even realizes its there anymore, just sort of overshadowed by downtown. I love that building though!

Smalls- I'll be out of town both weekends... Bleh.

We got back from Orlando late last night. I didn't get my golf's suspension done in time to take my car, so we took the wife's Subaru Legacy. I've had a lot of family issues going on the last few weeks for those of you that don't know. Unleaded in the south is well under 2.00/ gal right now, with diesel even 1.99 in some places. I think 1.83 was the cheapest unleaded I bought. The final overall figured at 34.6 mpg by doing the math, at 75-80 mph The trip computer showed 36.2. I figured with the slightly higher price for diesel, and the fact that I'd have had to use my roof carrier for luggage on the golf, the trip would have been nearly identical in fuel cost either way. Considering the Subaru is AWD and CVT automatic, it's a comfortable ride and nice in the hills of Tennessee in the rain. The only problem I have with the Subaru is that it's not a VW. It's fine on the road but doesn't feel like it was born on the highway. I don't know what it is about the suspension and or steering, it's just not exiting. I am very pleased with it overall, and other than brake pads and tires, at 60k this car hasn't needed a single screw turned. I've had people ask why on earth anyone would want a Subaru, and that's why!

Getting ready to order the suspension for mine too, 370k miles and it needs it ... I'm thinking the Blistein TC (non-sport), VR6 springs (non GTI) and possibly a 2" metalnerd lift. Also getting the upper strut and shock mounts.
What else should I get, my ball joints and tie rod ends are tight?

Do you have the strut tools, or are they not really needed?

Tony-
I have strut/ spring/ and spreader tools. Yes, you need them for the front, the rear is shocks and doesn't require anything special.
I would get tie rod ends anyway, the last couple sets I've dealt with I've had to cut the nuts off of them to separate them from the knuckle. Sway bar bushings and links if you've never done them before. And your control arm bushings are shot if they've never been replaced. I did new whole control arms with new bushings installed, I screwed up a set of bushings so I said screw it and got whole new arms.

So my car has almost always smoked on startup. Especially when it starts to get colder out. See Video 1. Well normally I'll just put in whatever diesel is cheapest or if im close Ill go the the local co-op and put B5 in. But this time I put in B20 and here is the difference. I've seen these results several times but have never recorded the difference. Crazy how much differently my car runs. Even while driving it just feels smoother.

Interesting... I've been looking for an exhaust fan to run on a timer for my garage to vent out the cloud i leave behind on startup in the mornings... Maybe i should look at getting some B20 instead.

tony you can fill up in noblesville next time you come to see me!

Lol I fill up about once a week...

Usually the Payless in Lafayette on 38. Sometimes I have to put a splash in it at the Pilot in Crawfordsville.

On my 2002 I used my cut off tool very carefully and got the old tie rod end out. Having done the LCA pushing out and pushing in new I am with you and maybe I will buy new arms again; of course I did that when the small LCA bushing fell apart after only a year.

I too have spring compressors and the spreader tool to get the strut out.

Does anyone have a triangle socket and vagcom that you'd let me borrow for a couple beers? I'm going to do my injection pump reseal here soon(going to order the dieselgeek kit on monday), I think my lower union is weeping pretty good.

I have a set of 205-65 16 inch Kumho Ecsta's on aluminum wheels. 3 or the 4 tires have nice even tread, 1 tire has inside wear due to a tie rod issue.

The aluminum wheels are pretty old and missing some pieces, but I want them gone so make me an offer.

I don't want to move these so make me an offer!! Text 320-267-1807 or chrisidzerda@gmail.com

Gone.

I have seen that car on the road. I have tried to catch up to him a couple of times, but never been successful. Always figured I'd run into the car at Lowe's or something but never have. Sad to hear it's for sale, I think it's the only other decently built car in Noblesville.

Whats up fellow Hoosiers? I'm a new TDI owner and seen we have this awesome site available to us. I'm located on the West side of Indianapolis in the Danville area. Looking forward to meeting several of you and picking your brains.

Ok guys I have a predicament that I need some help with. My jetta 06 TDI BRM DSG is having issues in the dsg. I keep getting a n215 solenoid short to B+, and a clutch adaptation at max limit. I've replaced the n215 solenoid, checked fluid levels, checked and cleaned all grounds, checked for bad wires and ohmed all wires out, even replaced the ecu. Now I found the paperwork saying the previous owner had replaced the mechatronics unit (customer supplied, so I dont know where he got it from) 20000 miles ago, with the same fault codes!
So here is the question, does anybody know what or where to look for a problem? Also, the stealership says a new mechatronics costs $1600 (which really isn't as bad as i thought), but should I swap out the dsg with a 6-speed manual, or just fix the mechatronics (not knowing if this indeed my problem)? I seen on craigslist a 06 BRM 6 speed for $5500, should I buy that and swap trannys? I'm at a loss here, I don't want to fight this issue down the road again, and I've put so much time and money into this thing already, I know if I get this fixed I SHOULD be good for awhile (that is until I upgrade my turbo and exhaust).
Any help would be appreciated.

No idea on your faults, but if that's all been checked/ replaced I'd guess it's internal. IF the mech was new 20K ago, (I'm guessing it wasn't new) it shouldn't be bad yet. You can have the dealership check it for software updates, re-set the adaptation, and diagnose it, but it'll cost you an hour labor at least. If you want to swap trannies, the info is all here on this site. I'll warn you though, it's a lot of time and a lot of work! Worth it if you ask me, but VW has never made an "automatic" that I've ever liked, even if it's a manual that shifts automatically. Do you have vcds?

Yes I do have VCDS. I was looking on Craigslist and came across a 2009 jetta tdi 6 speed manual, almost wondering if I should sell mine and buy that. I'm getting fed up with this thing

Since nobody's posted anything in here in a while, I will! We left Wednesday on a mini-spring break vacation to Gatlinburg/ pigeon forge. I put 954 miles on the TDI in four days. Loaded with my wife, myself, and my daughter (and our stuff). Cruising at 75-80 mph on the way there and back, but lots of in-town stoplight sitting while we were there and a day trip up to Clingmans Dome, NC (6,668 ft elevation.) Final results: 954 miles, 20.59 gallons of diesel (b20 before I left and shell D2 in gatlinburg) = 46.32 MPG, less than $43.00. Not too shabby for the old girl! I did give her some new rubber and brakes before we left as a bribe to do a good job for me, but she doesn't take much prodding to get out on the road. I drive trucks so much now that it really is a treat to road trip in the VW. That trip would have cost me almost $175.00 in my truck- I can buy a lot of ole smoky moonshine for the difference. Happy motoring!

I was in West Lafayette Saturday picking up a B5.5 TDI that had the hood blow up while driving. Left my house Saturday morning at 1:45am and got the car unloaded in my driveway at 6:00pm Saturday. 1007 miles round trip in my F250 Superduty 7.3 6 speed manual. My clutch switch failed on the trip, resulting in no cruise control :( Better than it failing resulting in a no start though.

I averaged 22 mpg on the way there pulling my tow dolly and 17 mpg on the way home towing the car.

Anybody around that knows how to do a camshaft and timing belt on BRM? I imagine I could do it, but it's not something I want to screw up on. You can come over and supervise me (basically drink my beer). :D
