Jerry- what's the matter with it? If you need anything let me know. I drive by your house twice a day, I could easily stop after work.

Btw- both of my cars are stuck in the driveway. Not because they won't start but because they are literally frozen into holes in the driveway. I haven't driven a Tdi of my own since the ice storm...

Thanks Neil but I'm suffering the same cause as you but it wasn't until today that I couldn't get my car out of the driveway! Damn thing is stuck in a rut of ice and just spins the tires. I'll just probably have to tie a rope to the rear tie down to our van and just get a gentle tow out. There's no ice melt to had anywhere in town!

DCell~ You should consider taking the axle nut and tie rod nut off and then you can remove the whole knuckle/strut assembly. You could easily change out the wheel bearings in press if take it all out since you will be right there anyway. I bought the metalnerd strut spreader if you want to borrow it. It definately simplified the process and would really make a difference if you were going to leave the knuckle on the car. Not sure if the Golf is the same but with the Jetta if you leave the knuckle in you also have to lower the engine cradle for clearance purposes. I didn't have to though cause I took it all out as an assembly.

On another note does anyone have a set of Timing belt tools they would like to loan/rent/sell/trade. I need to replace my belt in the next 2-3 weeks and will buy them if I can't come up with an alternative. I know Growler would do an excellent job but since I drive so much I am gonna need a belt every 1 1/2 to 2 years so I figure I might as well do them myself. It will help get me more familiar with the ol' 1.9 diesel that I have grown to love. PM me or call me if you have the tools and would like to sell/rent/loan or trade(I have a XBOX 360 I having been thinking of selling).

VEGBUG/DCELL--- Wish I saw the need for salt earlier. I still have four 80lb bags of Solar Salt that I may end up not using. Hope things are thawing out.

Later,

Joe

Looks like sun feb 29th will be TB sunday

So I'm doing A Timing belt on sun feb 20th, if you need one its a great time to join in and do yours with eyes watching or get it done for you. As for Veg bug get the o-rings and i will put them in its very easy and you don't even loose any coolant. Planning to start on feb 20 around 8 am.

I am screwed. I just did the oil change and while pulling the car up on the ramps, I heard the dreaded sound of my DMF going bad. It sounded like something might be rattling around. Can any one change one of these or do I need to go to the dealership?

fyrsail- You still plan on doing your timing belt this weekend? I ordered my parts on Tuesday evening and they shipped from Portland in a 1 1/2 days. I noticed a small leak coming from the bottom of the timing cover today so I will probably order a crank and cam seal just in case. Let me know if something is still planned.

Thanks,

Joe

bull im planning on at least on TB on sun come down around 8am if you want yours done also. as for clutches/DMf's they are easy and i do them also, they take around 6 hrs buy the full kit with single mass flywheel, LUK if you want quite or VR6/G60 if you want fast. Make sure to get the stretch bolts and the rear main seal, as you are there anyway and they give up after around 150K miles. Also anyone who wants to hang let me know so i can gather dogs or burgers or something, and maybe some hoppy beverages. Jerry your car is requested on sun, whether or not you come over.

Anyone with some tools and a strong back should be able to do it. There is a clutch alignment tool that makes it pretty easy. If your car is an ALH I have two very good used DMF's laying in my garage, if it would help you out.

Used DMFs are like playing russian roulette with your pocketbook, and muscles..

once they come out, they are good doorstops and not much else, unless someone is VERY desperate.. imho :)

Used DMF's

All I can say is both of them came out of German built cars, neither one made any noise, neither show much wear or damage, and they were only replaced in order to upgrade. I only kept them just in case I didn't like my eurospec sport SMF setup. They are worth 20 each in scrap metal, if nobody wants them. Just thought I'd offer.

What's a DMF sound like when failing?

On other notes ... I replaced my actuator yesterday. Damn, that circ-clip was a royal pain to get off!! The old one was frozen solid, the car is waaaay better now :)

I need to make plans to refresh the front suspension and get rid of the "clunk"

I wish i would have seen that fyrsail, was going to be doing TB today, I would have made plans to join...

productive day

Well today has been very productive on the fyrsail side of things, beside performing a TB procedure and doing some minor mods I have learned what a TAD is( no its not an inch or even a centimeter) And i also learn that frogs make tad poles, so it must be an animal of some kind that is stretched across a distance to show just how far it is when someone else ask how far the timing mark is from center and I also learned that when you just set a valve cover on the engine it might not be all the way on........... and others learned that (it smells good). Today I met two new TDI geeks and it seems that they will fit in with our weird group here in indy, and they have plans to attend GTG's in the future.

Had a good time with Frank and Matt on Saturday. Sorry I had to bail a "tad" early but I did get my little sister taken care of.

On another note my Jetta is currently sitting still. When I put the E-brake lever down this morning it didn't release the brakes at all. Cables appear to be frozen and I am contemplating cutting them so I can drive it tomorrow and then replacing the cable this weekend.

Its odd that the lever went down with the normal effort but didn't release anything. Guess I always figured it the cables would freeze that the lever wouldn't move either. Fun. Fun.

BTW A tad is as equally relevant to measurements as good-n-tight is. :)

you can usually "release" the caliper manually by working it a little and tapping on it with a screwdriver or whatever you have laying around. I wouldn't cut them if you can avoid it. If I remember correctly, there are a couple of tubes that the cables feed through that can come loose and be lost if there is no cable through them. You'll have to take the center console up to connect the ends and adjust the slack, but it's pretty simple otherwise.

ha! we've done three sets at the shop already this week! It's that time of year when the moisture in the rusty sections of cable freezes. For people that actually use the handbrake that can be a problem.

I got mine free with a love tap from my mallet. It still sticks so I am just not using it right now. Can't believe I forgot the best part of my day yesterday. I drove my trailblazer because of the brake cable issues and I ended up changing a flat tire in the slush on the side of the road.

Everyone should read the tdi newbie with strange problems mkiv jetta thread. It will make your day :)

I have read the newbie with strange problems thread. It is really worth the time. I had bad days working on cars and tractors never that bad. I really feel bad for the guy.
Thanks for good laugh Bullwinkle.

hey everyone! i have not been on in what seems like forevvvvvveeerrr! The golf is smoking like a train (not from excess fuel, rather oil) and using oil. Has great compression and still runs strong but is starting to burn oil like thats its job, i believe it to be making it past the valve seals. I know its not the turbo, has a 6 month old VNT-17 on it. So i was wondering if there was anybody around that would be willing to lend some TB tools. Also does anyone have a rough idea of what it costs to have the head rebuilt?

For the head and TB kit, head bolts, etc., I believe the total is around $1,000. You do the removal and install. Check with Franko6 (the head guru) - 417-232-4634. He often gives very good advice - for free!!

a machine shop could probably rebuild the head for a few hundred bucks. There are a couple of vendors on here that sell new and rebuilt heads, a new one is 1100 at id parts. I sold the tb tools I had, now kinda wishing I hadn't!

edit: just read dashers post- yes, check with frank06!

a DMF sounds something like a couple gravel rattling around in your trans. I didn't hear it until I got the car up on the ramps. Sorry it has taken so long to reply back had a family emergency in TN that I had to be away for awhile.

Craziness....One of the owners of a company I do work for called me to ask about a 2005 jetta tdi. His buddy owns a dealership and just took it in on trade. It a one owner nice vehicle, 5sp, 150k, recent tb replacement and he is gonna get it for $5,500.00. He asked if I thought it was a good deal and told to tell his buddy I'd give $5,700.00. Must be nice to get crazy hookups like this.
