My 02 Golf TDI is acting up and has me stumped. The immobilizer light (IMMO 3) is flashing and the car will not run as designed by the security system. Yes, battery is reading 12+ volts and about 2 years old.
Things I have done so far:
1) Tried all three keys (including valet key) and all still cause the immobilizer
2) Charged the battery with a smart charger
3) Disconnected battery; touched pos and neg cables to discharge capacitors
4) Checked fuses for resistance, all read <0.3 Ohms except for a ABS Hydraulic fuse on top of the battery, probably not related (and never had a warning for it) but replaced anyways
5) Left different keys in ignition for up to 2 hours --> no change
6) Cleared codes with VCDS --> keeps popping back
7) Cleared codes with VCDS while trying to start --> no change
Would appreciate any ideas. Thanks for all the help in keeping this car going strong.
Here's a VCDS scan if it helps

Looking at what I posted from the scan as a whole, I might have a ground issue. I cleaned the grounds earlier this year so I'll have to make sure everything is snug in the morning.

It actually looks like you need to resync your keys to your car. Clearing the code won't fix this. You're going to need to get the SKC, then use it inside VCDS to code the keys back to the car. Either that, or send your ECM off to a tuner to delete the immobilizer.

Have you done anything to your car right before this happened?

Some of the guys posting have had success just by leaving the key in place and turned to on and leaving it there for several minutes (with a charger in place).

Yes, when you leave they key in it, you want it ON. Seems like I've read you leave it on for like 3 or 4 hours.
This always pisses me off that a car not stolen or with certain components replaced would require re-acquisition of the secret code. I mean that's just bull stuff.

Grounds were clean. I did leave the key in the ignition switched to on for more than 3 hours today while connected to a charger as suggested. No dice. Called the local TDI guru and he suggested an Immobilizer delete which I’m kind of iffy on doing. The alternative was buying a new cluster but from their experience the part is in short supply.

I did replace the drivers side inner cv joint and left the key in the ignition but off to prevent the steering wheel from locking. Was not connected to a charger. However car was fine the first five starts after the job.

I’d just get the immo delete. You have an 02 so it’s unlikely anyone will steal it, and if it’s a 5spd manual that shrinks the pool of potential car thieves by about %75 anyway.

My daughter has an immo delete on her 01 and after I covered the flashing immo light with a piece of electrical tape you wouldn’t even know the delete was done.

That still doesn’t address the reason for the no start condition in the first place though.

If you are going to replace the cluster you WILL HAVE to do the same work that it would take to resync the current ECU and cluster. I would try to do that before replacing a cluster.

immo delete is definitely a good option. You really have little likelihood of auto theft of a 18 year old car.
