It should be relatively simple, although I've seen a number of vids & posts where people state how much of a struggle it was with one or both sides.

I've been working with mine on the Mk6 Jetta for about 30 minutes and can't get either side to release. I can get good access with my screwdriver and have a mirror see what I'm doing. The release tab is moving the full width of the window. The airbag is pulling in and out slightly with the tab being pushed down. I've jiggled the airbag all around but nothing gives.

Any way to diagnose whether there is a problem I can't see?

literally yank it once the hook from the airbag is no longer on top of the tab on the wheel, in that window.

you have to YANK it. it isnt an easy removal like other airbags.
if you yank it too hard, it will also pull the harness out of the MSFW plug which can break the tabs on the plug.

yep, i broke the tabs on mine. it still works, and the connector never fell out on its own.....

the mk6 bag is a PITA man. even my new mk8 wheel isnt so difficult to remove. it's about 100x easier
