I have to travel to NJ the beginning of March, 1600 miles, all I have at the moment is a 2000 passat 1.8T manual wagon, 92K miles, car runs perfect and most likely would make the drive, (2, 14 hour days) I'm looking at a 13 sportwagon, is this a mistake? should I just put tires on my 2000 and go? I haven't been following anything on Jetta's are they anything like the 13 sel prem Passat which I really detested. I don't think a small Liter gasser would perform well in the mountains, irrates me when they have to drop down two gears and run the rpms way up to maintain a 70mph cruise, any thoughs? I may have the check from my crushed 13 passat, I'll know monday, I've been all over the map on new cars chevy cruise and malibu turbos, beetle and jetta tdi, hybrids nothing with a V6 in it. Not interested in the MD or BMW price tags, 5 years used they bring the same price a new VW.

TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN.

I know the new MB E-class hits the US on 4/12/2013. Not sure if this includes the E250 bluetec wagon, but that would be the Rolex Clock Radio of diesels for sure.

There are plenty of ML350 bluetecs out there. I had one as a loaner and it performed well. But I don't know what it's like to live with.

On topic, I think you should pose this question in the Jetta wagon forum.

If any car needs tires there's no excuse delaying their inevitable replacement. You have some dough, so you might as well put the wagon in good working order.

Until you know what you really want for a new car, just rent a car for the trip to New Jersey.

Just rent what you are interested in buying and try that out for a weekend before buying it. If your other runs well get it going and up to speed and live with the gear drops. It's cheaper than a car payment.

I have to drive, primary purpose is to help brother rebuild his vacation home in Ocean City NJ so I need to haul tools so sportwagon made sense, if the consensus is they are prone to problems then, guess I'm no longer in the VW lane. None of the rental companies around here have diesels so possibly I could rent a 2.5 sportwagon it would at least give me a feel for the car? When i return home I'll have the luxury of time, time to test ride some new car platforms the MB idea sounds good, it was so easy before i'd pick up any old body style jetta tdi or passat B5 gas or diesel and I'd have a very nice car, now seems I'm a judge on Iron Chef, each car company is given a pile of electronics, some metal, plastic and glass and attempt to produce something passable, some of the comments on this site indicate they are not doing so well

No real experience JSW 2.5 vs. JSW TDI, but the difference between the Passat 2.5 and the Passat TDI is night and day.
Since you really hated the Passat TDI, maybe the JSW 2.5 would work.
My 09 JSW TDI, 62k miles, is wonderfully balanced and great fun to drive.
You're in a rush. Don't buy anything. Re-tire your 2000 Passat wagon, enjoy the ride, stop fussing:)

Good lord. You have a phenomenal car in the Passat. Just put new tires on it and drive until you need to put another set of tires on it. (of course while following the vw PM schedule with the increased capacity oil filter)

If you told specifics on why you detest your Passat they persons with 2013 JSW would be able to comment on if they find the same things with their car.

I do see a lot of negative postings but I also see a lot of positive postings. everyone with a negative comment will post but only a small percentage of people that are happy will post. You have been on here a while so know that as a group we tend to be a little bit type A personality about our cars.

I assume your 2013 was wrecked so you might try going to the same dealer you bought it at since your a returning customer there and see if they have a used 2012 or 11 jetta wagon. ask about renting it for a 2 week long test drive. You might get lucky since your a proven buyer and they might work something out for you. but if unsure dont jump into something because you feel pressured. use your passat or rent a car and think things thru. you have a 2000 passat, its a decision you obviously plan on living with for 15 years.

I think you're going to hate a JSW as much or more than you hated your Passat. Also, rushing into a purchase like that just so that you can take it on a rapidly approaching road trip throws all sorts of red flags up - test drive one several times before you drive it if that's what you want to get. Just my $0.02

Aa noted in your other thread on the same topic... get something other than a VW. You don't like them anymore, remember?

The problem is that there's a gap in the market at a certain price range that fulfills a particular need. The JSW will fill it well, but is probably not a wise long-term purchase. The MB and BMW diesel SUV's are still too expensive second hand. I think that's how some of us ended up with the Passat in the first place.

Thought about the Mazda CX-5, probably the 2.5L SkyActiv since you want power and efficiency? Lots of space, conventional technology, and has been receiving strong reviews since launch. Additionally, it returns about the best real world mpg of any crossover.
But you shouldn't rush into a purchase.

I know that you have VW in your heart as deep as most junkies are hooked on drugs (I'm a VW man myself).

Therefore, forget about anything but VW TDi's at this point; don't bother, because your itching for a new ride will not be quenched by anything else.

Though the Sportwagen TDi looks nice, you tasted the bigness of the Passat; the Sportswagen will not quench your thirst.

BUT, your bad moment with the Passat SEL made you weary.

SO, try a Passat SE.

I know, it has less features, and it costs $5K less than your old SEL. BUT, you want the car for its basics, not for the fancy frills.

So, give it a try. If after 6 months you are still unhappy, sell it to someone else (believe me, there are plenty of eager beavers after used Passat SE TDi out there).

At the price gas is selling TODAY, there will be plenty of TDi buyers for the next 6 months plus.

Rent a car for the March trip. $200/week for unlimited mileage, replacement if something happens during the trip, and no depreciation on your own vehicles.

$200/week for a tiny car.

I heard that Hertz is renting the Passat TDi. Be willing to pay premium...

Tiny car is $150/week. Mid sizers should be $200/week. While they are not well equipped, they are cheap reliable transportation.

I'm with VeeDub. He should not buy rush into buying a car because he needs one for a trip. He should not buy another new VW based on his complaints with his Passat.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. :D

I'd fly SW and check my tools if possible. Otherwise i'd rent a full sized truck for about $320/week. It will haul building materials better than a VW. The V8 will drink some gas, but won't have trouble in the mountains.

Just put new tires on the gasser Passat wagon. It needs new tires anyway and that's equivalent to the cost of renting a car for the trip.

I have to assume after all your disdainful post's about the NMS Passat that you do realize that this is the VW Passat Family (NMS and B7) TDIs (2012+) forum correct?

I know I'm a dumb a$$ for buying that horrible car, which thank god is going to the crusher, hope they make chinese pooper scoopers out of it, that would be so fitting, but yes I know two columns up is the Jetta, I don't believe I'll be hanging out there, if you see me it will be on the B5 forum, but I will check back and chuckle as your world famous NMS continue to fall apart:)

Waste? bet they said the same thing about Ernest Hemingway when he wrote War and Peace or Old Man and the Sea, what a waste of paper, you fail to see the humor in my thoughts:) the site is just a graveyard of problems most of which only get suggestions for a solution, we have no concrete fixes since the car is so new and VW is lost, we tell everyone to take it back to the dealer but the problems very rarely get fixed especially electrical ones. I took it upon myself to aquire all the OE schemetics for the car because of this site, I have a class book on the can bus and what makes it tick, I talked with the service manager and offered my services for free, he's all for it, I have a meeting with the big boss, if he approves I go to VW school:) You may want to hang on to my bandwidth and quit complaining about my so called trolling, one day it may be usefull:) I just love you guys:) Later

10K in three months on my '13 SEL NMS... Still love it. ALL Car/Manufacturer have lemons. Just read the forms for the respective cars. 90% of the posts on any forum are people *****ing about the cars they bought but mostly due to buyer’s remorse. Get over the fact that you didn't like your NMS, maybe you rushed into that purchase too...
