Its almost to the point now. What isn't wrong with it? =)

Trans, I think my turbo is fahked, Exhaust leaks. Got some nice dents and dings, need a new bumper, small rust spot, the seat warmers/Passenger side window is fahked.

I've been doing alot of research and I really like the newer GTI. No Turbo Lag, Lighting fast shifts, great suspension, and still gets 25plus MPG beating on it. Plus the DSG trans is pretty solid, HPA has had a stage 3 kit on a DSG car for over a year and hasn't had one problem..

I'd love to build the TDI, but I'm starting to see thats its going to cost more than a down payment on a car to fix...

Chi-town help

So I've been reading this forums for the last week straight and will be heading up to Chicago area in the next few days to hopefully buy a 2006 jetta TDI from a dealer in Bridgeview IL 60455. 89,000 miles .... the dealer said that they bought it at an auction... carfax one owner no accidents... I asked about the maintenance records, timing belt changed, if they had a mechanic there check it out... the salesman replied that they just drive it around to check it out, no mechanics there, they just wash the cars.... so i don't know how well it's been cared for..... Is there a trusty mechanic closer than the two listed in the forum (40 minutes) I wanted someone knowledgable about the tdi to check it out for me, VAG-COM?, drive it, give opinion. I figure I'll change the tb as soon as possible... I just don't know the tell-tell signs of poor maintenance and don't want to get a car that won't last the 400,000 miles I want to put on it. If not a mechanic, maybe I can meet up with someone that knows TDI and get their opinion.... If I can get a mechanic to check it out before I drive five hours to look at it that'd be great.. or if someone wants to help a brother out and test drive this car for me and give me their opinion it'd be worth a case of their favorite cold beer (or other token of appreciation) It'll be my first one, I plan putting a chip in it and keeping it well loved.

carfax is borderline WORTHLESS

be VERY careful with auction cars:)

I'm sure you can find a TDI that has been properly cared for, the market is flooded with them right now... problem is you have to filter through all the curbstoners, scam artists, and people who generally can't read an owner's manual:rolleyes:

Ughhhhhhhhhh man alive. 3 IP R&Rs in the NB, with about 5 tries resetting the timing each time... those are about 60% harder than a timing belt, methinks. Finally got it right with the other TDC mark on the flywheel. Why two marks? Don't ask, but it runs good now.

So recent maintenance I have done which may be of interest to others: ALH injection pump removal, rebuild (by DFIS) and replacement; front wheel bearings in my Golf; establishing timing diagrams for a Standun H-30-60 cupping press oh wait that isn't car-related. ;)

Let me know if you need some help around Chicago, I might be able to help. I still have VCDS / Vag-Com and it's still very freaking useful. I also still like good beer.

Thanks for the advice mctdi and sip'n diesel. Matt contacted me from chicago. He's a full time mechanic, now I know. I ended up picking up a 2006 tdi black on black with 99,000 miles from cinci area. I decided against the auction car because of the advice and a dealer salesman said to be leery also bc chicago is a hub for dumping cars with katrina damage... piece of mind knowing one owner and maintenance records.. In louisville I drove a 2001 with 160,000 miles, excellent condition, all records and receipts, it seemed underpowered. I drove the 06 back on twisty indiana roads, 250 miles on a quarter tank. I am excited to see the mpg when we empty the first tank.. I'll have the tb done asap. there's supposed to be a good mechanic in evansville in front of Lowes off the Loyd about 350 for labor (so tells me a tdi beetle owner). thanks for the help and hope to see you at a gtg... looking forward to getting a rocketchip.
