Ignition Switch-- Need help

I am replacing my ignition switch due to a no start issue. I pulled the column to access the switch and when I pulled it out this spring fell out. I have no idea where it came from.

Does anyone know where this gets placed during the re-assembly?

After some research I think it goes between the U-joint and the bearing at the bottom of the support tube.

Yep you're right. On the bottom at the u joint.

Yep, it's on page 48-3 of your Bentley.

Personally I cant tell why the spring is there. It kept me from marking streering wheel alignment. And it took a few tries after to get it straight. .pain in the but. So I left it out and got it straight.

It's there to center the shaft in the column. There is also one at the top.

The whole ignition switch process was a little stressful removing the steering wheel with markings. Make sure not to strip anything and be careful. I had to change mine with a new because of it not working in hot summer days. Starts like a charm now, just make sure to buy OEM like I did. You don't want to go through this again.
