Ignition Chime Stopped Working?

I posted this on another forum and only got crickets as a response so I thought I'd post this up here to see if anyone had also experienced it.

I first noticed several days ago that the chime for the ignition has stopped working while warming up my glow plugs. Where there is usually a constant dinging it was now dead silent.

Fast forward to today when when I hopped in the car for lunch it was suddenly back! When I was done eating I got back in the car to start it up and it was gone again.

What gives?

Could this be a fuse issue or what?

Iv had some strange things happen too !! One time my footwell lts brightened and dimmed on their own and just the other day when I started the car the cabin lights remained on until I recycled the ignition ! Welcome to the world of computer controlled electronics !!!

Not trying to be a smart a$$ but did you have your seatbelt buckled when the chime didn't go off? Is the ignition chime different than the seatbelt chime?

Honestly don't know... getting into the car and starting it is a routine most of us I'm sure (like tying your shoes), therefore I can only assume that I've been doing it the same every time since I'm on auto pilot when doing it.

That is of course just an assumption.

I recently purchased a new 2012 Golf TDI DSG base model and had a similar problem from day one. The footwell lighting came on and off on their own and disabling the rear wiper when on. When the dealer ran a check the codes came up all switches on the steering wheel were bad. Obviously they were not, they tried to reprogram the module connected to the switches with no success. VW had the dealer replace the module and no trouble since. Hope this helps, good luck.

Yep, my seatbelt chime stop working several times. I don't wear my seatbelt and at about 70K it quit working. That lasted about 20k miles and then suddenly it started working again. It temporarily quit working about 10K later, but for now it's working again. I have 126K on my 2010 sportwagen, and the other intermittent quirk is the right rear passenger door lock that does not open with the key fob, but every now and then it works properly. I just live with it. I don't want to spend $$$ getting it fixed.

Just checked this morning... my standard operating procedure is to start the car, then to buckle my seatbelt.

No chime again this morning. :(

That really still does not answer what happened that day. Unless a part is failing somewhere the only other reason the chime didn't sound is that the belt had already been fastened.

Belt not fastened... chime not working... 8-10 times now that I've been paying attention.

I'm guessing something is failing. Maybe a seat belt sensor isn't working correctly.

Mine started doing that since last week...

Also, The brake indicator in the dash stays on 3 or 4 seconds after I release the hand brake...and usually takes 5 secondes to turn on after I engage the handbrake...

Seems to me you are on the right track- I think it is in the seat belt sensor- after it dings a bit, it will stop, restart again later- if you never put seat belt on- I wonder if the intermittent chiming you are experiences is just the seat belt going the a time cycle?

Could be....

Chime definitely works with key in ignition and turned to the "on" position and door open, but as soon as you close the door the chime stops.

Eventually I'll get this looked at... I just hope it's not a taste of what's to come.

For about 5 weeks my seat belt chime stopped, too. I was actually happy about it, but it started back up last week. My routine is to get in, close door, start car, then put on seat belt, so I never had the belt on when starting the car. Good ol' VW electronics!

My 2010 Golf TDI has been doing the same thing... it's definitely related to the seatbelt sensor, and also definitely temperature related. It dings reliably all summer and is intermittent all winter. If I unbuckle my seatbelt while moving it might give a single ding (with a flicker of the seatbelt light)... or it might do the full series of warning dings... or it might do nothing at all.

Notice this myself on my 2011 Golf and weirdly enough fixed it so far by squeezing bottom part of the drivers belt buckle with my fingers  where the cables must go. I figured it must be just a loose connection.

Another way to know if its the seat belt senor is unbuckle the seat belt at a stop light or while driving and you should hear a chime and a seat belt indicator should come on the dash.

It was bugging the hell out of me because sometimes it goes and other times it doesn't and now its consistent :D

Starting working again on mine....but I'm starting to beleive there's a software problem....Temperature was 4C...I started my car with the door open and I heard a higher pitch beep compared to the normal one and the dash was flashing with the usual snowflake....seatbelt warning started working again after that...weird...
