If you are considering buyback which cars are you looking at as replacements?

I hadn't thought about the X1, but I guess I should add it to the list to be considered. In general, the BMWs (or maybe just the dealer) seem too expensive. I like the GTI a lot, so maybe that's what everything will get compared against? Anyway, I also test drove a used C300 MB and it was nice, but didn't excite me. Don't get me wrong, the MBs are nice cars, but who makes a "driver's car" today?

Took a look at the Honda Civic Hatchback. Seems decent for the money, but didn't bother test driving -- wife says "no" to the goofy bumpers! Haha...
Check out the Jaguars, they are supposed to be overtaking BMW as the maker or "driver's cars".

My two frontrunners are the '17 Civic Hatchback EX and '17 Subaru Impreza Sport.
While the styling on the Civic is polarizing, the more I see it in person the more I like it. I test drove one a couple weeks ago and was pleased with the cabin and lack of road noise (one of the many things I liked about my Golf). The "touch screen everything" controls and vast amounts of black plastic on the front and rear bumpers would take getting used to. I really REALLY want to like the Sport (6MT) but it lacks a few things that the EX offers; Carplay, heated seats, and LaneWatch.

I'm driving the Impreza Sport tomorrow. I drove the Premium version last weekend and was underwhelmed. Hoping the Sport is a bit more engaging, but the cabin should be significantly nicer than the Premium. It's a little down on power to the Honda and the Honda CVT completely blows away the Subaru CVT, but the styling is more subdued and I like it. All wheel drive is not a necessity in NC, but there are days where it could come in handy.

Not sure what else to check out. Not too interested in the Mazda 3 or Ford Focus.
I believe I have a winner.
The Subaru Impreza Sport (hatchback) is a very good car. I test drove an Ice Silver with Harmon Kardon/Rear Cross Traffic Alert/Blind Spot/Moonroof.
It looks great from the outside, I really liked the interior, the sound system was damn good too.
It's a few thousand more than the Civic; but the interior is far better, I like the styling more, and it has all wheel drive. I'm just waiting until I can return my TDI before I buy.

I wish I could test drive an Impreza with a manual trans, but my guess is that Subaru will flood the dealer lots with CVTs first. I'd spend 90%+ of my time is the top gear anyway (mostly interstate commute to work) so I'd only get to enjoy rowing the gears on on-ramps. Charlotte traffic isn't getting any better.

We bought a Mercedes Benz E-320 wagon for European delivery a few years ago, it was the best drivetrain (V-6 rear wheel drive) of any vehicle we've ever owned but maintenance was very expensive. We had a loaner C class MB and I thought I was driving a Chevy Vega, it was really bad - noisy, cheesy interior and too small. Maybe they are better now. No more MB's for me, total cost of ownership is way too high.
Co-worker has a 2013 C300. Lot's of hard plastic trim. The 2013 JSW interior seems to be at least the the same level or above in terms of quality of materials.

We almost bought an alltrack, but bought a new civic hatchback instead. The mileage is 10mpg better and it was about $7k less. Apples to oranges, I know.
I don't mind the Civic and Honda makes nice cars. but I don't think I'd like it much in 3 or 4 years. But I guess if I were a good American consumer I'd be trading it about then.

Not true at all. We have a 2013 Sport Wagon SEL and I had a 2013 Mercedes C class rental while in Germany in 2013. There is really no comparison in quality of the interior. Mercedes is 100 percent nicer. Drives smoother is faster. I wouldn't buy the C class though. And would have preferred the Sport Wagon in Germany as of the increased space.

They have updated since then and my nephew has an even nicer interior but it doesn't perform as well as a 3 series.

For 60k the E-320 wagon better be nice.

Take a look at the Pacifica Hybrid. It has all of the features of the regular Pacifica except for middle row stow-and-go (you still get back row stow-and-go), but you get more MPG (in the 30s) and you have the option of plugging it in at home to use less gasoline. Also, you get an eCVT transmission rather than the always-shifting 9-speed automatic, you get regenerative braking, and you get a $7,500 federal tax credit. IMO, the Hybrid is the only way to go if you're looking at the Pacifica.
Yeah, I'm definitely considering that! Ordering has opened up for the Pacifica Hybrid minivan, and it's finally available to build/configure on their website, too.

There is a link to an interesting panel discussion with the chief engineers here:

Bought a 2013 Ford C-Max Energi. Trying something different. Leather, roof, Nav, back up camera. Slightly better mpg, a little less room, less than half the miles and I pocket a good bit of the money.

It has "boring station wagon" written all over it. ;-) Seriously, we had a Subaru Forester XT a while back, and while that was a pretty dull-looking car, it was loads of fun. I want to like the Impreza wagon, but I'll pass. If they had something like the old WRX hatchback, I'd probably be interested. I still like the looks of that one.

The C300 I test drove seemed to have a nice interior -- lots of leather trimming, etc. I don't think it had split rear seats (like most cars have 60/40), just a tiny pass-through? It's not often I need it, but c'mon.... It was a fine interior. Sure, the ride was smooth, but was it *fun*? It didn't excite me. Yes, it was fast, but so were other cars. For example, the A3 is as fast (as far as I can tell), but less expensive, but maybe not quite as heavy/solid-feeling.

Meanwhile, the CLA and GLA have some hard plastics in the interior and are definitely a step down. Maybe someone is thinking the CLA? I like them a lot, though.

We did a new 1.8 Passat last Nov. Could not give away the 1010 TDI Sportswagon, they would not take it in trade, so it is still here waiting for the buy back! I got tired of waiting so I picked up an old MB SLK32 AMG for a toy. Now a two car family with 2.5 cars. I want my buy back, and make the TDI gone.

Bought a 2015 A8L TDI in August and what a great car it is. Haven't scheduled my appointment yet for turn in of the A3 because I'm gonna commute with it 1000 miles a month until I get tired of it or need the 40K (or total it).

I imagine that the 2018 Chevy Equinox has been mentioned before in this and similar threads. At least on paper, the 2018 diesel Equinox looks like the closest thing to my 2010 TDI JSW I've heard of. (Even has the 110V socket in the rear seat area.) And, with AWD, it's like a diesel Alltrack.

My buyback is scheduled for early Feb. I may wait until the diesel '18 Equinox shows up, supposedly in the spring.

Must be my perception then because the materials used for the interior of his Mercedes were not any nicer than our 2013 Jetta Sportwagen. The 2013 Jetta materials were pretty close to our 2007 A4 Audi at the time. The Audi was much nicer than his Mercedes. VW got dinged on the next gen Jettas for use of the harder plastic on the dash.

Wife wanted AWD. I wanted another wagon like the JSW. Didn't want a cross-over although took a look at the Mazda CX-5. Considered Alltrack SEL but for the price I felt like it should come with a leather interior and its in its first year (I always stay away from first production years).
About the only thing "first model year" about the alltrack is the offroad mode bit and the tupperware trim on the outside. The rest is golf wagon and golf R all wheel drive.

I test drove the civic hatchback, it was ok....i liked all the electronic stuff. I did not like all the fake plastic crap on the outside of the car tho

kind of deciding between an alltrack and gti right now. I don't have a family and live in the city, so the GTI appeals to me more from a parking perspective (street parking) - but I like the cargo ability + 4 wheel drive of the alltrack.

probably sticking with VW since thats all ive ever driven. I test drove other cars and just couldn't get into them :/
I think subconciously that's a lot of why I'm staying with VW too. It's comfortable for me. I did like the Mazda6 I have to say. It was close.

Learned to drive on one of those boats, with wood paneling.
I'd love to find a low mileage one for cheap and have it updated interior wise.
Oh man, but they're so comfortable already! The automatic climate control is kinda obnoxious though.

Getting out of it in the parking lot at work this morning and the woman getting out of her car next to me stops and just goes "Oh my god I love your wagon! That wood paneling is great!"

In my single days I'd have asked her to go for a ride. ;)

LOL, I had a 1994 Caprice wagon for years.
My first car was was a '90 Caprice Classic. I've missed them so. Dieselgate was the perfect reason to do something stupid like buy a 20 year old station wagon form $1000.

I'm turning mine in on Friday (12/23). Already bought a 2015 Audi A3 2.0t Quattro. After 15 years of driving a diesel and owning 4 TDIs, finally going back to a gasser. I still love TDIs, but this is a purely a financial decision.

My paperwork is almost complete, honestly I have mixed feelings about my 2013 Jetta (Dixie) going away, it's been a great car... but not much on the fun side. If I ever need another car to commute in a gasser Jetta will be my choice. But for now, it's going to be the new STI without the wing. I'm making money on the buyback deal and it's time to have a little fun :)

Yeah, I thought about that. Still first model year out of the Pubela manufacturing plant with AWD and I always avoid first model years. Once I see enough of them out on the road and they got some decent running time to develop a track record, I might come back to it at some point but until then....first time in 15+ years with no VW/Audi product in the garage.

What kind of discounts is Heritage offering you on the All Track? Seems like with the 1000 dollar loyalty incentive I could get 2600 off an SE according to USAA buying service.

I haven't talked to any dealers about alltrack pricing, so unsure. Heritage did quote me about 3.5k more than some NOVA dealers on a GTI Sport tho
Did you tell that to the Heritage dealers. What I don't like about the process is they say they won't know the January incentives until the 4th. So I have to get my loan approved and then email them on the fifth. And try to get a good deal before my buyback on the 11th. If I don't get a good deal then cancel and try again next month.

Purchased a cpo 2015 Nissan Leaf for the wife to commute in and run around town on weekends. What a fun car! Her daily commute is only 11 miles round trip, so it fits us well. Super cool to be able to "fill the tank" in the garage overnight.

I've never really looked at Nissans before getting the Leaf, but find myself looking at Altimas now. Lots of car for the money and the incentives are pretty nice. Local dealer is throwing out $6500 off msrp on the 2016 Altimas in stock. Tempting...
