09 TDI sedan, sold back 12/16. Present cars 2013 BMW X5 diesel, 2015 Corvette convertible
I recently bought a CPO BMW. I used a personal check for a five figure initial payment (they had not yet done the CPO work and it was going to take a couple of weeks, so they had plenty of time for that check to clear.)

I thought they would want a cashier's check for the final five figure payment on the day I completed the transaction and picked it up. But no, they were willing to take a personal check again.

Maybe the fact my credit score is over 800 had something to do with it. Or, I just have an honest face. :)

If you write them a personal check, don't expect to be driving the car away that day - they wait for it to clear. If you get a cashier's check, you dont have to wait.

A dealer drove a car to me, I wrote them a $12k personal check, they left the car and key. It all depends on the dealer (and my credit score is good, but not > 800).

Commonly happens in Texas. We bought a new 2013 Santa Fe and drove it home with no money down (we did sign the contract). I mailed them a Cashier's check the next day. Never had to go back - dealer was 70 miles away. New plates and paperwork were mailed to us.

When we bought the 2006 Jetta, it was from a small corner lot dealer in Phoenix, and it was Presidents Day. The deal only came together the day before. We flew in from Oakland, he picked us up, we wrote him a personal check for $22,000 and whatever fees/taxes, and drove off.

Being a holiday, he and his wife were careful, but we brought a bank statement and let him dial our bank's 1-800 number to verify funds on their automated system. It was a leap of faith on the dealer's part to go along with this -- no credit check or other verification -- and I wouldn't expect the same in most cases.

On the other hand, similar situation with the Volvo I just picked up, except new car that we're financing through them. Although they had my info, they didn't run my credit until I flew in, and it suddenly felt really strange driving home with their $45k car without giving them a dime.

When I bought the JSW, they required me to fill out a credit application even though I intended to finance outside of VW. Basically they would step in and finance the thing if the credit union wouldn't for some reason.

But having a credit score above 800 undoubtedly also helped.

Aw, man. I kind of wanted to walk in with a briefcase full of Benjamins like it was an illicit arms deal or something. :D
There's no reason you can't carry a briefcase full of cash if you prefer. The IRS form is just to record movement of large sums of cash to track folks whose income might be derived from sources other than honest endeavors.

As long as you're not hiding unreported cash income you'd have nothing to worry about.

The VW dealership in TX that I got my Jetta from said people walked in and paid cash in full for vehicles regularly. I remember being pretty shocked.

Lots of drug money in Texas. Hard to get it across the border. Buying a vehicle and stuffing it with green is a way that it's done.

You know, that was my first thought, too.
But apparently, they said it was mostly Asian families doing that - saving up, I guess, and buying a car for their kid off to college.

Either way, I admit to being a bit jealous of people who can walk in and pay cash for a car. 46 years old and I still live paycheck to paycheck.
That particular situation kind of makes me want to get a cheaper car and "make do". Devil's advocate is on my shoulder, though, telling me to take this opportunity and get myself a nice car. Didn't realize how good I had it with the Jetta TDI sedan. Finding a replacement's been tough. It feels like a car in a class level above what it's actually at. Anything with a comparable interior that still has performance to it is like $10k more!

I wouldn't hold your breath while waiting...
I wonder if we've lost more lives to people holding their breath waiting on the Mazda diesel or from our NOx spewing German engineered machines. DAS AUTO!

T, if you can get the National Geograpic channel, look up their documentary series on "Drugs, Inc." and spend some time watching each hour long session. There are two or three on Texas cities and it's eye opening to see what the cartels are doing.

My then 12 year old pushed for the 2000 cyber green beetle with the understanding that she would drive when she got old enough. By that time, she decided that she wouldn't be able to concentrate on traffic and shifting at the same time. The diesel part of it was my wife's decision. Darn her! If I hadn't learn to love the torque on the 90 hp TDI, then I probably wouldn't be worring about what to replace my cars with.
