I finally replaced my TDi with a 2016 RAM 1500 4x4 Crew Cab. I needed another truck after having the TDi for 3 years and I'm at a threshold on mileage for the TDi so I pulled the trigger. Here is to hoping our buybacks come soon!

Hemi?

I'm starting to look at trucks (again), but the prices are off the map. And the slightly used 2 - 3 year old models seem to all have 100 K miles on them and they are asking near new prices. Crazy.

I've not cared for the RAV4 (rentals) interior as well as the CR-V, but don't know for sure how the top trims balance out on either of them. What's interesting is that the are rated for the same highway mileage (31 mpg) but the RAV4 hybrid is rated at 34 mpg for city, which puts it about 9 mpg better than the Honda. Pricing on the very top trims is the same. Might come down to which dealer would you rather put up with?
I know looks are subjective- but I don't love the RAV4. I was just looking around and it looks like 2016 X1s are less $$$ than I would have thought. I think I might go test drive one!

Nice truck! We have a 2004 2500 diesel that ha been a great truck- with only 80k miles hopefully we'll have another 12 years with it.

Just got back from the local dealer. Test drove a 2017 Jetta 4dr TSI SE with 1.4 turbo and automatic. Will miss the mileage and I always liked the DSG in the TDI, but still felt nice and plenty of pep for this senior citizen. Didn't talk pricing at all - yet. It's rated at 38mpg hwy.

I think I said up-thread that it would likely be a 328d wagon for me. I'm less certain now. I don't want to permanently give up the cargo space of the JSW, but the 328ds seem disproportionately expensive, and I like my A3. Starting to think toward keeping the A3 and buying an older truck (ideally a diesel, because reasons) for when I need to haul stuff. The A3 and the truck together wouldn't run me more than the 328d.

I felt the same with the 328d (or 335d for that matter). I thought either one would be a good fit as a replacement but the prices are just so high in my opinion and don't justify it (especially the 328d wagons).

I plan on at least looking at and test driving an AllTtack Sportwagen. If I can't have diesel I'd like to get AWD along with all the new electronic safety gingerbread. Don't want an SUV, they're too tall (I'm too short) to load my kayak or bike on top.

@aja8888 Yes it is a Hemi. The sticker was extremely high at 54k but we paid 37k out the door after a 17k discount.

NONE! :-)
I am buying the new vehicle for my wife. We have a small electric vehicle she drives in good weather. In winter - I want her in something safer - all wheel drive is preferable - she has a very long commute each day - some of it on some back roads in the foothills that can be icy in winter, etc. 30-40 mile commute each day...

I have done research on subaru forester, mazda cx-5, and started looking at vw golf sportwagen with 4-motion.

Subaru does best in snow/ice as it's 4wd system is not "reactive" - it doesn't wait for a slipping wheel to engage the rear wheels - it is continuously distributing power to all four wheels - either 60/40 or 50/50 (depending on whether tranny is auto vs. manual).

Subaru has better crash avoidance with their eyesight system that will auto brake the car. My wife is not a good driver - my wife has rear ended two cars in the past - one of them a county sheriff..

Resale for subaru in oregon is very good. All the eco-groovy hipsters want one.. ;-)

Subaru has had issues with their new CVT tranny and has had oil consumption problems - their reliability "slipped" in latest Consumer Reports polling. Long term reliability in subaru isn't that great - why haven't they ever fixed issue with blowing head gaskets at higher miles?

Mazda CX-5 has best reliability and is "funner to drive" - in consumer reports poll it fares poorly in snow driving (see reactive 4wd system comment above). Good resale as well - but not as good as the subaru.

VW golf sportwagen with 4 motion. VW reliability is not as good as other options. 4-motion 4wd system is 90/10 split on drive wheels until slippage - so it is better than other "reactive 4wd systems" where 0% goes to rear wheels until slippage occurs... My wife loved her golf tdi - wants something a tad bigger and slightly higher off ground - so all-track might fit bill.

But, given that I can't get my TDI claim submitted on line successfully and calling the VW claims phone line has not helped - I won't look VW until they get their sh*t together as a company. If this goes on - I will "swear them off" and completely cross them off my list (forever).

jeff

p.s. the new chevy equinox with the 1.6 liter diesel looks appealing. My wife *really* doesn't want to buy another gas car after having a diesel. This motor has been in production in europe for several years... So it should not have "teething problems". I might wait to see what initial reliability looks like for this one...

Between the chrome, LEDs, and Alloys that thing doesn't even look like a truck.

Getting rid of the 12 JSW and getting into a Porsche 996T. Just wish they'd hurry this up, already missed a few great cars and a couple more are about to go

I test drove one. Nice ride. Noticeably longer drop to the ground for my foot getting out than my car, but not prohibitively so. I actually liked it, but I have long legs.

I looked at this car and weighed the pros and cons.

Pros: blindside monitor, USB port, some updating of technology

Cons: no soft touch dash board (hard plastic used), no DSG transmission, rims look cheap, cheaper looking window control buttons, no charger in console lid, no speakers in A pillars, cheap looking dash trim surrounding speedometer and radio, no floor mats or trunk mats (depending on the add ons, aka take your mats from the TDI jetta)

I'm sure its a fine option but at what price? approx. $23k sticker (with "special internet price" of $19.8k) but should be $17k tops in my opinion. I hope you get a great deal on it and enjoy it.

2017 Chevy Volt now -- sold '03 Jetta Wagon :-(
I have pretty much narrowed it down to the Chevy Volt. I am really going to miss the diesel wagon but fuel efficiency is my priority. I have a huge commute that a 200+ mile ev would work but a Tesla is not in my budget. Hopefully be trading the volt in for one of these in three years
http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/m...ucial-volkswagen-id-electric-concept-revealed
Why not buy the Chevy Bolt then?
That's what I was thinking, too, but 200-mile commute could be pushing it with a Bolt, which has no gasoline range extender like the Volt. If that commute is all or mostly highway (and not stop-and-go), then the efficiency will degrade, and it will degrade further in the Winter, and if you run the AC or Heat.
The Volt has a 53-mile stated, but I've been getting about 70 miles. That is with 35-45 mph driving on my daily commute, with mostly no AC (windows down). Temp ranges 40 F to 80 F.
When we had 90 F temps this Summer, I was cranking AC, and seeing ranges in the low 60s with that same commute, so still a 10% improvement of the EPA range of 53. I'm hoping to see similar with the Bolt, but time will tell. Similar to how the pre-2009 TDIs often exceeded their EPA ranges, too. Lots of posts from people achieving 50+ MPG on the highway.

Oregon_rider, I had a Subaru Legacy Wagon in the '90s and the head gasket blew @70k miles leaving me stranded with engine locked up. So, much as they tout reliability and owner love, I've been soured on them. I've had great experience with my VWs. Neither my '07 Wolfsburg Jetta gasser or my '09 TDI Jetta have ever given me any problem at all, just did the routine maintenance.

Now there's a swap you don't see too often
Sold my old 2002 Camaro SS that had over 500 at the wheels a while back...dying to get back to a fast daily driver. Both my TDI's were business vehicles, and I now have other vehicles in place of them since business is more established. JSW is now my daily, so it's being replaced with a fun car

2017 Sportwagon TDI?
check Mazda's Denmark site, they sell both diesel and manual transmission 6 wagons. Wouldn't that be sweet? We get screwed in North America...
I think you can get a diesel, 6sp manual, AWD Mazda 6 wagon in some parts of the world. What I'd give...

Yup. Just like we get the "dumbed-down" versions of Hondas and Nissans, too. The 08-12 Accord in China is basically an Acura TSX. The American Infiniti I35 is a Nissan Maxima/Cefiro in Asia. Cus heaven forbid we walk onto a Toyota dealership and see a $19,000 Camry SE parked next to a $45,000 Lexus ES350 (Same friggin car with tonss more features... and it's a *Lexus* woooowwww). That would be downright offensive her in 'murica!
P.S. I'd be running to Mazda tomorrow if they had the 6 wagon here. Asking MSRP? Sure!
Diesel? I'd be making it rain on the salesman's desk.
I can pick up a 2016 CPO Mazda6 GT for $5k+ less and have a helluva better experience. So what if I drop from 45 to 38ish hwy MPG? Interior is way better and it's just more fun in general. I read a great review from the UK, where it's already available. Over there, it's absolutely nothing spectacular. They already have diesel wagons/hatches with more power and competitive (if not better) fuel economy. It may put a small damper on Prius sales here in the US, but I won't be there at the lot waiting for delivery like I would be a Mazda6 wagon. I would sleep on the lot if it was a diesel.
Just watched/listened to this entire 1hr presentation on G-vectoring. I think Mazda gets me...now if only they'd bring the 6 wagon here for me to buy!

I'm also going to go with a Volt. Here in Los Angeles you can lease an LT with 12,000 miles per year for $129 to $149 a month. EV's are changing so fast that in three years I could buy it out or lease a new one that may go 200 miles on EV.

Thanks for the comment.

I look at consumer reports reliability reports and it kind of baffles me. Look at a four year old mazda and looks pretty reliable in their survey... Look at a four year old subaru and it looks pretty sketchy...

But they rank subaru as having better expected reliability than the mazda.

Pretty obviously some weird bias happening there...

My commute is only 8 miles each way. I just picked up a new Evo gsr this past weekend. Love it. The golf is parked until they have me turn it in. Hopefully sooner rather than later

More research may be in order. Mazda's AWD is predictive, not reactive. We have a CX-5 which we drive over the Cascade Mountains a couple of times a month. Granted tires make a huge difference and we do run Blizzak DM-V1s during the winter driving season. With them fitted it's is very sure footed in ice and snow conditions.

In anticipation of turning our 2010 JSW TDI in for buy-back, my wife and I have been shopping around. We kicked tires on the new AllTrack and thought AWD would be nice, but they wanted about $34k for the one on our dealer's floor (w. $1600 "additional mark-up to adjust for market demand" as they said on the supplementary sticker). Lotta $ for a Golf Wagon even if it does have AWD.

So, that very evening, we were chatting with some friends about our new car shopping and they said, "Hey, we have a friend who's settling her Mom's estate and she has an SUV she REALLY wants to sell." Looking into it we found it was a 2010 MB ML350 (gas) with only 59k miles. It had been owned by this lady's 85 yr. old mother who lived on a ranch about 90 mi. outside the city where all her doctors and her MB dealer were. So the miles it had were essentially all country hi-way miles. And she'd compulsively maintained the car at the MB dealer with 7 oil changes in 6 yrs, trans. & diff flush, 3 brake fluid flushes, new pads and rotors all around at 50k mi., spark plugs @ 55k mi, etc., etc. plus detailed and waxed every year by the dealer! A pristine, classic "little old lady's car" with a car guy's service record!!

I had a pre-buy w. an experienced indie MB mechanic and he couldn't find anything wrong with it. Commented that it looked like the rear seats had never been sat in!! Daughter selling the car wanted $18k for it (KBB high end private sale price was $18.6; Dealer retail around $22k). So I bought it!

NOT what I imagined for a replacement for my JSW but it was too good to pass up. Of course it's going to burn a LOT more fuel than my TDI, but I can buy an awful lot of premium gas for the $12-$14 k. more I would have spent on a new AllTrack. My estimated settlement from VW is $15,250, which will go a long way toward paying for this car, so I'm a happy guy.

I received this e-mail from my VW dealer yesterday.

I just got off a phone call with our Volkswagen representative who informed me that VW is now offering an additional $1,000 off the purchase of any new 2017 Volkswagen (excluding the #PinkBeetle, GolfR, and Alltrack).

In other words, any quotes we've given you prior to 10/26/2016 on any new 2017 Volkswagens (excluding the #PinkBeetle, GolfR, and Alltrack) can be reduced by $1,000 through 10/31/2016.

Of course none of us will have money in hand by Oct 31. I already have three cars for two drivers. I will not even think about purschasing anything until I have cash in had.

Plus the only thing I would consider on their lots today is the alltrack.
