A 2wd truck is worthless
One tire on wet grass and you're stuck and no resale value compared to a 4wd
Different requirements. All I've ever owned is rwd trucks. I don't have a cabin in the woods and no need to do poorly maintained gravel roads since the inlaws are both gone. When I bought my 03 Avalanche, the up charge for 4wd was about $2500. When I got rid of it two years later, the difference in trade was about $1000.

I don't really want a full sized since my wife doesn't like driving a school bus sized vehicle (her words and one of the reasons I got rid of the Avalanche). However, I can pick up a brand new double cab for less than the canyon crew cab, at least if I insist on the Diesel engine.

Check out cars.com. What I do is run a 250 mile radius, sort the price lowest to highest and Exclude crew cabs (I want a "double cab") and 2wd.

The highest trim level I see that kind of discount is the LT, which is what I'm looking for. The best deals that I've seen advertised are in NC, PA, and New England. Trucks up in New England...it's nothing to see a $43k truck (ex. LT Z71) advertised around $28.5-29k. I've got family up there, so I'm tempted to run up there, stay for a bit, and get a new truck while I'm up there.
Here in TX we are not seeing those deals, but maybe i have not looked had enough yet. I have a sister in CT. Maybe I'll make a trip if a really good deal is available. My Passat is in the buyback loop. I have a 2003 Jetta TDI to drive until I find something else for the longer term. I miss my old 2002 Dodge Ram, but it had 230,000 K on it and the trans was going so I sold it.

I have a buddy who works at a GM dealer here in CT. There are huge deals on Sierras here. I am not a truck guy so I was not interested but I know there are big deals

*Maybe take advantage of the GMS I can get... but GM. Ew.

Not sure what I'd get if I went the used route. Maybe a Ford Edge.

We have an 03 Silverado "work truck" with rear seat and suicide doors. 2wd, V6, never needed 4wd but have needed the full size bed for those loads of gravel, 2x4s, sheets of plywood. Also drove it numerous times to the beach with a family of four, we have a timeshare so we could throw lots of suitcases, coolers and even sewing machine and guitars in the bed to take with us for a week. With 230K miles on it, we don't do that any more, but it still runs OK (pretty much a DD) and it's paid off and it's a truck, which means when you need it you've got one. I wouldn't buy a new one unless this one died totally, but I won't get rid of it until it does.

Was going to wait to see what incentives the dealer would offer on a mkvii gti on turn-in (loved my mkv and mkvi)...but with a new job that cut my commute from 75 m to 8, and my wife just trading in her sedan for an suv...I decided to pick up something ridiculous to replace the jsw:

I will most likely look into a 2005 Passat TDi with "Low" miles or 2004-2006 Jetta TDi. Put the rest of the money into savings. We thought we where done with kids but surprise... now need a bigger house.

Dream car would be 2004 A4 Quattro TDi but ya not in America...

Equipped exactly as I wanted
Paid Dealer Invoice, No dealer fee. Didn't need it, but took advantage of 0% for 48 months.

Our 2012 TDI with 109,943 miles is parked until buyback.

We bought a 2016 Highlander XLE over Labor Day weekend. I have now owned a hybrid, and 3 TDIs. I went to the TDI after the hybrid failed me time and again. This has been a supreme disappointment, and when I think about the premium I paid for a TDI over a gasser, (THREE times), I get more pissed. I always tried to make an environmentally responsible choice. Since that didn't work, I decided to do what best serves my family. We have two kids who are getting taller by the minute, we are both tall, and two dogs. We just went on vacation and it was sooo nice to have the extra room. The husband's GTI will be paid off in about 12 months, so we will still have a VW to drive, but the Beetle is on the way out just as soon as possible.

NEVER buy the first year model of VW. Especially with all wheel drive...I predict a Pandora's box of issues....my .02

So here’s a funny story:

I visited my designated TDI buyback dealer today to talk about my post-buyback plans and the gentlemen I spoke with shared some interesting information.

For TDIers who are less boneheaded than me and therefore figured out that the entire VW line is to be ignored: VW ships a new AWD model next month called the Golf Alltrack. As indicated, I’m a bonehead so I’ve been closely following developments related to the release of the Golf Alltrack in anticipation of purchasing one with my forthcoming generous compensation (in combination with a pile of my own money).

According to reams of recent press, the Golf Alltrack is positioned to put major points on the board in terms of restoring faith in the brand and changing the whole tone of the conversation related to VW. Further, VW press release materials make a point to delineate three trim levels: “S”, “SE”, and “SEL”; with the “S” (entry trim) starting below 27K (28 for the DSG). In fact, you can’t google “Alltrack” without being reminded that this miraculous vehicle is going on sale next month for for a mere $26,950.00 (+ $ 845.00 destination).

Well, when I visited my designated TDI buyback dealership today to discuss how to arrange for me to acquire a Golf Alltrack, they indicated that VW will not be shipping ANY vehicles in the S trim. None. Zero. Nada. Not a single vehicle in the stated entry trim. And that in reality, the entry trim is the SE trim, which is not $26,950.00 (+ $ 845.00 destination).

This particular dealership is fairly reputable within my region, and I can't identify any way in which the sales team would benefit from misleading me. After all, if I'm a big enough dope to consider VW again, you'd figure I'd make a great customer.

So, assuming the info I got today is correct, VW has semi-aggressively marketed this car @ 27K but doesn't plan to sell a single unit for less than 32K.

How far will this company go to convince me that they are sick and tired of having me as a customer, and will I finally get the message this time?

If it's the same AWD system as the R I don't think there'll be much of a problem.

Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of looking at a new replacement vehicle, as my wife just got one of these 6 months ago (and it's a blast):

My situation has improved for the better since I got the jetta, my commute went from 75+ a day to just under 16 in a better paying job.

I caught my unicorn a few months ago, I can finally afford it. Syclone #2504. It's a beast. 87k miles, low 12 seconds in the 1/4.

Ill be using a 92 Sonoma I bought for $500 as a daily. Interior has been redone, it'll get painted once I get the money from the buyback

Funny to see what people are replacing their TDIs with. The replacements are so far afield from TDIs I wonder why they bought one in the first place.

Sadly there is nothing out there in the marketplace that makes for a reasonable "straight across" trade. Or even close to it. :(

We bought a Mazda3. It's pretty close. Doesn't have the torque of the TDI but so much smoother, and the steering is much more precise. Mileage is going to be very close to the TDI's 40.2 mpg over 76k miles.

I've considered one of these. Hard to find one (first-gen hatchback, natch) that 1) isn't being sold by a teenager, 2) has a manual tranny, and/or 3) doesn't have a bajillion miles on it already. Also doesn't have the cargo space of the Sportwagen, unfortunately.

Ding! We have a winner! The answer is, "there is no direct replacement" Bob!

Plus, peoples' situation changes. Someone who commuted 75 miles one way 5 years ago now works at home. Another person may need to haul a horse trailer. Another now has a family, or is an empty nester, or any number of reasons.

Plus, this is a thread to discuss what people consider as a replacement for their TDI. Of course the answers will be all over the place.

I mentioned this earlier (on this thread or another?) that I was looking at mid-2000s Mercedes C-Class wagons. Thought that might be a reasonable replacement. Those suckers get 20 mpg, on premium fuel!!! My wife's new V8 Durango does nearly that well on regular, and that's a 3-row AWD SUV!

Ralph, the Mazda3 Hatch 2.0 6M test drive left a positive impression on this sailor.
Please post MPG info when you've inclination/time.

Hopefully the 2.0 does better than the 2.5 in my 6. Rated for 40 on the highway, and I could never get above 36mpg. Considering that I almost always get above the ratings in cars, I was let down. Heck, I got 36 on the highway in my WRX and FR-S on a regular basis. Otherwise, I was really impressed with the newer Mazdas.

Want my '06 3s hatch? I'm 43 and the original owner. Can't even talk the 15 year old into driving (seems to be a common trend. Not at all how my generation was at that age). 115k miles, manual, sunroof, A/C...only tiny spots of rust, which is to be expected in MI. We'll be trading ours in along with the JSW. right now we'll likely end up with another 3 hatch. Had considered the Honda Civic hatch, until I saw that manual is only on the base package. May look at the Kia Forte5 SX, too, but I don't expect that we'll end up as fond of that as we will the new 3.

Amen to all of that. I took delivery this evening of a 2015.5 Volvo XC70 T6. More space, higher "luxury" content, and AWD were all factors. Plus it's the last chance to get their 3L turbo inline 6. EPA estimates 20 MPG combined, so half of what I was used to in my 2010 Jetta sedan. But I'm in a completely different phase of life now, and fuel consumption is not my top concern.

Agree with the other replies about there not being anything else close to it on the market (at the same price point).

I want to add that I got a Mk4 TDI as my very first car in my 20s, and after driving it a bit I felt like it was slow as **** and a bit too boring for a college kid. I bought the GTI after as a second car, and now my general preferences are swinging back towards the TDI again. So I think what people desire definitely evolves over time.

We've been looking at replacements for the better half's JSW. Trying to get decent MPG and little to no money out of pocket. So far she's looked at:

2013-15 MKZ hybrids - likes the style, didn't like the high center console or touch controls

2015 Optima/Sonata hybrids -- style okay, hard plastics inside

2015 CTS -- love love the style, love the drive, takes a hit in MPG, hard to find one under $30k

2013-17 Fusion hybrid -- nice car, styling getting old

With the frustration of not getting a hit on any of those, she's considering spending a little more so up next for test drives are 2014 MBZ E250 and Jaguar XE 20d.

Our other car is a 2007 M3 5 door GT. Love everything about it it except mileage (avg 23mpg) and road noise. We've been thinking about the CX-3 as a replacement for the JSW
