If you are considering buyback which cars are you looking at as replacements?

Friend of mine bought a volt because it qualifies as an alternative fuel vehicle license plate which allows use of the car pool
Lane with no passengers only the driver

Saves 50 minutes each way on his commute
Plus the volt payment is less than he was spending on gas in his F-150 for his 700 mile a week commute
It seems crazy, but then again, fuel was a lot more expensive when we bought our Golf TDI. If gas/fuel spiked further, most people would have been in a world of hurt. Now, I'm not so sure it makes sense to get a fuel-efficient car, now that I'm not driving much and fuel is cheap, but either of those could change....

I'm looking at a Volt real hard too. Drove a couple of them and think they're pretty cool. If not a Volt, perhaps a GTI.

Also with an awd if you get towed with anything other then a flat bed your screwed!!!! So if you get towed and don't know if they used a flat bed look for some expensive drive train repairs. That is why I DO NOT LIKE AWD!

Well, earlier this year I was towed for the first time in my life and the AAA driver insisted on putting a set of small wheels underneath my Ford Explorer front wheels because he was uncertain if it was AWD or not!

He behaved like a real pro

When I was driving 500-1000 miles a week and getting paid .57 cents a mile from my employer I bought a used golf for $3000

After a year they told me I had to get a company truck and I could pick it out
I got a tundra crewmax
Sold the golf for $3500

I bought a 8 year old expedition at an auction , Msrp $51K new , we paid $6K

It guzzles gas but is roomy comfy and way cheaper than a new vehicle and the 4wd goes very well in the snow and mud

Wife still has a 01 beetle Tdi but it has some bizarre power problems and is not throwing codes
Do I spend $1500 on a new pump for a car that's only worth $2500?

Probably not

I will never buy a newer vehicle again
Way too complicated for no reason
They make em complex just because they can and to prevent any owner from bein able to work on it

My next truck will be the nicest 87-91 K-5 Blazer I can find

The wife's next car will probably be a 65-68 mustang and I will add efi and AC and a 5 speed

In this part of the world, where there are a high proportion of AWD cars, all the tow operations use flat beds for cars, pickups, and SUVs.

^^ Best idea in inclement weather right here! I do the same. I've got great traction accelerating usually, but the brake test is the easiest to figure out actual conditions. Being in NC, winter events aren't common, so my biggest threat is people. Thankfully I go to work well before others hit the road, so I'm usually safe.
After 21 years in Charlotte, I've learned to play native. If the winter weather sounds like it may get bad, stay home. Ok, it's not really that bad but almost. I have a steep driveway that dumps into the middle of a steep hill. If I go down hill, I just have a different hill to climb on the other side. It also helps to have the ability to decide when I don't feel safe and not go into the office.

I grew up driving in Iowa, so know how to do winter driving. I just get to choose when.

Due to ground clearance, VW recommends only flat beds for the new beetles. That put me in the habit of requesting only flat beds for any of my VWs.

I don't like AWD because of the extra weight and complexity. Also AWD only helps you get going; it doesn't help with turning and stopping.

Winter tires do all three.

And AWD actually hurts your stopping ability because the vehicles are heavier.

I've parked the Passat until the buyback and got a great deal on a 2016 Nissan Maxima SR. I don't drive anywhere near the miles I used to for work so don't have as much need for the excellent gas mileage any more. Totally different driving experience from the Passat (as per design and purpose) and loving it so far.

Great looking car. Glad to see that you got a good deal. It was a wise choice to sit back on the Passat and wait for the buyback. In retrospect, I wish I would have done the same thing :)

Very sharp. How is the CVT?

Every CVT is terrible
My wife had a new Nissan Murano w/CVT several years ago. Her technical savvy and car appreciation didn't extend much beyond the Bose stereo which she loved but I didn't like driving it.

In part because I'm old and old-fashioned I suppose but that car with CVT just didn't feel right for me.

When my wife got her Golf TDI, it had a subwoofer in the trunk on top of the spare tire (which meant no full-sized spare). I am not a fan of subwoofers in general - I make her turn the thing off when I am in her car, and frankly I would rather have the full-sized spare.

The Volvo has no spare tire at all - just a can of fix-a-flat and a compressor that you plug into the cigarette lighter . I am not sure, but I think there is still room in the trunk for the spare - I just have to go out and buy one. Believe it or not, the car did come with a jack and a wrench, but without a spare it isn't clear how that is ever going to be useful.

What's missing is a tire plug kit (glue, plug, reamer). You can jack the car up where the flat is and rotate the tire to see where the plug needs to go. I wouldn't use fix-a-flat in a good tire.

I've got no problems with the CVT in my new Honda Accord. The car is very quiet and smooth. To me, the CVT drives perfectly fine. I honestly don't even hardly notice it's not a typical automatic transmission.

It's just like the DSG, some people seemed to hate them. I was perfectly content with it.

Thanks! I find myself opening the garage door every so often to stare at it. While I was skeptical/concerned about the CVT going into the test drive, I came away very impressed. I had previously driven a 2013 Altima with the CVT as a rental and it was terrible with an annoying whine. They have massively improved it since then and unless you know it's a CVT and really pay attention it behaves just like a traditional auto with no whine. It's no DSG, but is no traditional (previous generations) CVT either, Nissan did a great job tweaking and overhauling it.

We had similar impressions with a rental Corolla last year.

I came within a cat's whisker of making an offer on a Q5 TDI with 17k miles yesterday. Instead I came home, slept on it, and reread the Q5 Forum here, and I'm going to pass. Nice vehicle, still love the TDI for the same reasons I bought the Jetta, but between EPA and VWAG I don't need the headaches.

I really wish diesels had a larger marketshare in the U.S. but VWAG has set that back if not killed it.

Pretty much narrowed down to Chevy Equinox or Cadillac SRX for me.

I mostly like the DSG, but when I test-drove an Outback a few years ago, the CVT was weird, and only added to the feeling of a slow, sluggish car. It's good to hear that they are improving CVTs. Seems like a good idea, in theory.

Could be. I've never even opened the door on one but am interested in the economy. I've had a full spectrum on my list and everything ends up being a compromise. I know that I could keep it but have weighed my reasons and plan to take the buyback anytime from inception to this time next year.
I seriously considered the Volt. Nice car with lots of bells and whistles (though GM dumped HD radio, which I love). However, the lack of space coming from my JSW was a killer. Plus, I've never been in love with GM products (irrational, I know).

Wound up going with the Audi A3 Sportback E-Tron, their plug-in hybrid. Only gets ~15-20 miles on the battery, but has a little more space than the Volt, similar cabin size as the JSW, but shorter, so less cargo room. Gas/highway mileage isn't quite as good as my JSW, but not bad. I drove it hard on the highway home from San Antonio to Houston and got a little over 34mpg. My JSW would've done around 37-38 tops. But my work commute is 5 miles each way so I'll drive most of the week on battery.

As someone else said, there's no point in trying to justify a particular car. Buy what you like. I really like this Audi.

Now, when I sell back my JSW, I'll pay off debt, stick the rest in the bank and have fun.

Oh, and re: the discussion up above about CVT - this one comes with a 6 speed S-Tronic transmission. You can even get paddle shifters if you want, but mine doesn't have them.

So to bring back a topic from 15 pages ago...

Got a picture of my sax in the trunk. You can see it fits, but is actually wider than the opening. If there wasn't a pocket behind the wheel, or if the opening was any smaller, I wouldn't be able to get it in. I recently read a review of the Mazda 6 that specifically mentioned the generous trunk opening, so I'm going to go take a look at lunch time today. We'll see!

Also got a shot of the scratch that little zip tie gave it...
