If you are considering buyback which cars are you looking at as replacements?

I am beyond frustrated trying to pick a new car. I really like the look of the Subaru Crosstrek and I test drove one and liked it but I keep hearing how slow and uncomfortable they are. I am considering a Golf or an Alltrack but I don't know what to go with. Any thoughts on Subaru? I am so used to being comfortable in my Jetta and I don't want to be uncomfortable.

An Outback is on my shortlist. I really like the Gen4 (2015-17) but I am not sure if I want to spend 30Kish on a car. Used ones are going for stupid money, almost doesn't pay to buy used when new ones can be had for up to $1K below invoice. 10-14's are available in manual transmission and with a short shift kit and a bigger rear sway, they are a viable option but I would be looking upper teens to get one with under 50K miles. If VW gets aggressive with a loyalty program, and they throw a couple of thousand to us, and I can get an Alltrack stick for low 20's..that is the leader for me. I do like the room of the Outback, cargo area is huge. and really suits our needs but like the drive of the VW.

I'm still thinking vw gti for the next car. Simply because it has all the needed headroom I need. The other option is the bmw x1. The X3 surprisingly has less headroom than the x1
Both were fwd. There was one section of the test drive where I had to stop for a light on a hill... lit up the front tires in both cars :D

also thinking about a GTI or a X1??? the MPG for both are about the same? but with the X1 you get all wheel drive!!!

If it is decided to buy back the 3.0 TDIs, I have a Prestige A6 TDI and should I decide to part with it (which is a big IF since I adore the car), I'll probably get an X5 Diesel unless they decide to bring and sell the Q7 TDI stateside assuming this whole debacle is solved.

Hah! I too test drove a 6MT Clubman (vanilla, not S). In SPORT mode, the thing was a hoot. In regular mode, it seemed adequate around town, although I missed the torque. I put it in ECO mode once, and.... that didn't last very long. The boy did really like the dedicated rear moonroof, and didn't complain when the front sunroof opened (as often happens in our minivan due to airflow/noise issues)
We looked at a 2017 Forester. While you can get the sunroof with the 6MT, it's still pretty plasticky in there, and felt so boring (it's our safe fallback).
We also looked at a Jeep Renegade, as you can also get the 6MT with a host of reasonable options. Sadly, the dealer didn't have a 6MT immediately around for us to drive - so they may just lose out. Also, our smaller dog crate still fit in the cargo area of the Renegade, which was a win.
The Wrangler Unlimited is where our heart is, but the head is saying no (vehicle cost, fuel costs).
Coming out of a JSW, it's going to be hard to find a vehicle with similar trim, cargo space, and MT (as has been noted). Really trying to not go back to VW, but if the filthy lucre is of high enough quantity to draw us back in, we may opt for a GTI SE w/PP and DCC. Can't see us going down to a gas GSW - the de-contented 5MT trim just doesn't do it.
The Wrangler is nice but no VW. Love our Golf

I think we may go GTI with PP and DCC as well.

After a few mentions of the AllTrack, I searched on it - now my #1 replacement.

AWD, larger than a JSW, VW fit and finish, ride quality, what's not to like? Seems like the perfect replacement for the JSW. Could be a decent save for VW. Oh and 6M available after launch . . . not sure when.

Would love to hear anything from the dealer representatives that are here if there is anything you can share.

Been eyeing a double deuce for years but have nowhere to put it without freaking out the neighborhood;
Back when I was debating which car to buy in 2012, it was between my dream Hummer H1 and the TDI. I decided on the TDI because it was the conservative choice and better financial choice for me and 1 dog... and because I lived in an apartment.

Now that I own 8 acres in the forest with some pretty difficult obstacles, a water crossing, multiple trails, and I have an awesome wife who can't drive a manual but has a practical car and 2 dogs... the situation has changed enough that I might pull the trigger on a Humvee.

I'm drawn to simple, rugged vehicles. Military type vehicles have always had appeal to me. I actually considered a Stewart & Stevenson LMTV as well, since it would be nice to have something that could tow my backhoe... but that thing would absolutely destroy my trails...

If no need for awd, the GTI is hard to beat
Yeah, my number one choice right now is the 2017 gti S Sport. It includes the must have features like performance package and lighting package

The bmw x1 is a bit of a reach price wise. It's also now a FWD platform (shares the same underpinningswith the mini clubman). The seats also quite frankly are a deal breaker. Perhaps a previous generation x1 with sport package (for the seats alone). Still, bmws tend have some major issues with cooling systems after warranty ends
The diesel engines that bmw has issues with carbon buildup from 20-80k miles depending on how much city driving you do. The cleaning procedure is also very pricy and not for the faint of heart DIYer.

I've looked at the Alltrack too, but ultimately it's a GSW slightly lifted with AWD. Think it's a great addition for VW, but ultimately I'd be facing the same issues inherent in a Golf or GSW: cramped legroom with little ones in RF car seats.

If I stay with VW it would most likely be in a V6 or 1.8T Passat, and quite frankly the idea bores me to tears.

This tidbit made me go hunt down the 2017 press release. Also interesting to note is the 2017 GTI SE comes with the PP standard. Which is intriguing.

That, and apparently the 5MT vanilla GSW could be had with AWD.

All from the 2017 model release press.

So you test drove it and liked it. Why would you prioritise the opinions of people you don't know and have never met, over your own personal experience?

My Volvo gets 3 out of 5 on most review sites. I test drove it and really liked it. Which matters more?

It's very hard to get a true impression on a short test drive anyway. If you want to be sure, why not rent one for a week? Avis has the Crosstrek. I actually always liked the Volvo after renting an S60 for a one week road trip.

I'm looking at Wranglers too as something different. I'd consider a GTI but I need to fit a baritone sax in it regularly, and it would be nice to not have to fold a seat to do it.

2x 2013 JSW (1 manual BOUGHT BACK 12/20/16, 1 DSG BOUGHT BACK 1/14/17), Audi A3 e-tron gas-plugin-hybrid, gas Volvo V60
Just picked up a 2016 V60 yesterday, on a 3 year lease. $257 a month, with $3.5 K down (both plus tax) for 10k miles per year. Discount was about $9200 off the list, including $4k lease cash, and $1K conquest cash. Their starting point for negotiation was $8200 off!

The way I see it, the buyback will pay my new downpayment once the loan on the Passat is paid off.

The Premier package is free until end of August, which makes for a pretty decent spec, with leather, moonroof, etc. I had to compromise on the colour. It's white, which I'm hoping will grow on me. But what a nice drive. Quiet, with a smooth ride, and the seats are fabulous! My spec has 17" wheels with Michelins from the factory, which helps the ride, Im sure.

Awesome deal. Unfortunately our Volvo dealer doesn't have any V60 except one 2015.5 so we did Euro delivery on a V60 platinum. Didn't get quite that much off but got around 4k off and it is a 2017 platinum trim with the packages I want and we get 2 free tickets and 4 nights in Sweden (promo on now). So a decent deal.

I've looked in other locals at dealers who have 2016 V60 and figured you could get really good deals for on-lot vehicles.

I also got an Audi A3 etron 2016 model this weekend. After reading about someone here whose friend got $11k off I went looking for something similar. Got $8.1k off plus I get $5500 in tax credits between federal and state so overall it is like $13.6k off the MSRP (with tax credits). (And 1.5% on 72 months). Got free tinted windows (the dealer had had them done but seems to have not listed that in the price online, just the on-car dealer added options sticker, so we negotiated and agreed by email without it.) I didn't realize it until I was home the next day. I did have to fly from UT to AZ to pick it up and drive it back. I submitted inquiries to 11 dealers in 5states Friday night and a couple dealers were hungry. One local and one in AZ but I liked the AZ color and package/options list better (and he offered first so e were part way down the path when the other dealer came through -- came down to color and packages).

We have 2x 2013 JSW TDI so are replacing two cars this year, hence the Volvo order and Audi purchase.

Have you been in or driven an H1? They're really not great trucks. Cool factor is undeniable but they are painfully slow and handle poorly. I'm a rugged truck junkie too and if I had h1 money I would spend it on a restored landcruiser. FJ40, 70, or 80 for sure. If you can nab a Canadian diesel FJ70 you'll have an unstoppable machine that will take you wherever you want to go. Most of those older diesel yota motors have many parts that Toyota has used on diesel forklifts and industrial vehicles here in the US so parts aren't hard to come by.

Yes I have. I happen to love them for what they are, while acknowledging some areas I would like to improve on. :)

They're selling right now for $11k on eBay with a title, or $5-7k with an "off road use only" tag from GovPlanet. It's complicated... but it looks feasible that I can have a good condition HMMWV for around $13k with the "options" that I would like and title it in VA. Then I'd rely on a $2k motorcycle to get the fuel economy I need, and a HMMWV for farm use and poor weather driving.

Checked with my local dealership, who showed me the price list for the Alltrack. The SEL, which I believe is the top model, was coming in at around $32k MSRP and some change. This price did not include destination. They also mentioned that they are expecting their share of Alltracks to be there around the time buybacks start - Nov 2016.

The price list looked to be official, with letterhead and everything.

2017 Passat release date??

Any word on a release date for the 2017 Passat? Dealer inventory near me getting low on 16s. May still need to wait a while for a significant sale like offered on 2016s in stock.

I picked up a 2015 (not 2015.5) CPO V60 earlier today. The dealer was a bit of a ways away, so I had to fly down, do the paperwork and then drive it back. I got nearly everything I wanted in the car, and it fits in the garage (barely).

It will take a bit of getting used to all of the different controls, and tomorrow I will need to pick up the "Fit Kit" for the Thule roof rack that I had on the JSW.

For people contemplating a V60, a couple of comments. Options are very much a la carte. There are a couple of trim levels, which influence to a degree what options are standard and what ones you pay extra for. If you are ordering something, you get complete control over what you get of course. If you are buying off the lot or buying CPO, you have to pay closer attention to what each car has and compare it to the list of things you really want.

One thing that I should note is that backup cameras on Volvo are not standard. Some have it, some don't. And for the some that don't have it, some have the extra stuff in the wiring harness that is needed, and some don't. Apparently a dealer can do a lookup using the VIN to determine whether the wiring is ready or not. If it has the wiring, a dealer can install the camera and complete the install (for a fee, of course). If you don't have the wiring, my understanding is that the dealer won't touch it.

Secondly, a lot of cars these days don't have a spare tire any more. They give you a portable compressor and a can of fix-a-flat. It isn't just Volvo - other manufacturers do the same thing these days. The reasoning in part is that they can save both weight and money, and lots of customers will call roadside service anyways (the article I read compared knowing how to change tires to driving a manual - lots of people don't know how to do either). But even if you call roadside service, and you don't have a proper spare of some sort, you are looking at a tow to a tire shop that hopefully has your size. There is room in the trunk for a proper spare however, so one of the things on my new todo list is to find a cheap rim and tire of the proper size (along with a jack and a wrench).

The compressor/fix-a-flat can kind of work if you just pick up a nail (but tire shops hate it when you bring in a tire with that fix-a-flat stuff in it). But if you damage the sidewall or get a blowout, you are looking at a tow to a tire shop.

My V60 is the "Platinum" trim level, so it came with navigation and the backup camera. It doesn't have things like BLIS (blind spot system), adaptive cruise control, "HomeLink" and a few other things that some people get. There were apparently some changes from 2015 to 2015.5 where they added some of these things.

Finally, there is an Android app from Volvo with the owners manual that is a lot easier to browse than the paper version.

My wife's 13 Hyundai didn't come with a spare either, but it does have a jack. After a blowout 1/2 mile from home that made her 2 hours late for work (that I could have changed in 15 minutes) I went online and got a spare from a dealer down south somewhere. Was around $100... Even came with a new foam insert for the trunk. The local dealer wanted her to schedule a service appointment to get one, because the don't come mounted to the rim from the factory... So whatever dealer I got it from made a wise decision to mount a bunch and sell em! I'd imagine someone out there is doing the same for lots of cars these days.

What's the prevailing wind feeling of reliability with the TSi's? TDI's have their share of known issues pre-scandal... But we deal. A lot of people in my family are going to look at me cross-eyed if I get another VW, I'd at least like to know if others have a good feel for the new golfs, other than what I read in magazines (mostly good).

I drove a GTI today. Thought I might be able to delete that one from my list. No way. I loved it. The steering and turn in, and handling felt so good, especially compared to my current Passat, which tends to wallow over bumps. On another note, I asked him if her had heard of any incentives for current TDI owners to keep them in a VW, and he said the "Rumor" he heard that was being talked about was $5,000.00. Disclaimer: This is only verbal information from a VW dealer salesperson - it is not official and it might not be accurate (although I am positive he believed it and he seemed like a pretty honest guy). Thanks for sharing. No question that $5k would be a powerful incentive. Let's hope it pans out!

$5K makes sense to me. $1k or $2K wouldn't do it.
Now I wonder if someone returning a VW TDI could get the $5K from Audi instead of VW?

Salesperson I talked with seemed sure that end of year deals will be better than what is offered with buyback. I think he just wanted to suck me in to a buy. They only have four door GTIs so I wasn't interested in even testing.
