If you are considering buyback which cars are you looking at as replacements?

My letter is up, so I'm done to the Equinox or maybe a CX-5. It comes down to what ends up being the best deal.

The city mileage is going to suck. Ugh. But I need to cargo space.

I go Thursday to pick up our new Forester XT Touring. Got a pretty good deal on it. Will take a hit on mileage but 0-60 in 6 seconds in the safest SUV around...no brainer. The visibility out of it is AMAZING. The eyesight features are AMAZING.

I kind of wanted to stick with a hatchback if possible, but not an SUV. Someone here had mentioned that the older X1 was their replacement. it's more like a hot hatch than a SUV. Thanks for the tip, as I got a used BMW X1. I hadn't realized that this was an option, as I was shopping, although that was partly due to me concentrating on new cars.

Mileage is not great, but then again, the TDI wasn't as good as hoped with my short trips. No luxury features. Fast.

I had about settled on a GTI, but they were in short supply here if you wanted an upper model. Well, buying used also saved money. Didn't see many used GTIs that were appealing. Saw no Wolfsburg edition Golfs either. I think I'd be as happy with a GTI, but this is a nice change. I paid too much, but it was what I was looking for, ultimately.

.... I went through the same thought process in my search. I could get a brand new Jeep, Toyota, Dodge, etc for the same price as a lightly used BMW with a great warranty. I finally just said F it...at the end of the day a car is a car and all the matters is that I'm happy. It's all about me...ha!
Plus, this whole diesel fiasco gave us the opportunity to consider things we may not have normally.
If this wasn't happening, I'd probably be driving my car for another 6 years.
Ok, a new Corolla would be less than my used BMW, but yeah.. It's cheaper than most new cars. Plus this one is the cheapest BMW. :-/

I wouldn't have gotten a new BMW tho, at these prices.

Has anyone driven a Honda Accord V6 Touring or considering replacing the TDI with one?
MIL drives a 2013 Honda Accord V6 coupe, but I think it's an EX. 2017 Touring trim levels for Hondas are very nice, but this older EX is no slouch. The interior is very roomy and comfortable. It feels like it has more power than my TDI Jetta, but is a little "heavier" off the mark. In a drag race, I suspect the Accord would muscle past my lil Jetta.
The Accord feels more solid overall. Definitely a mid-sized vehicle.

I bought a 2014 Volt yesterday.
So 2012 Touareg TDI becomes a 2017 Forester Premium and a 2013 Sportwagon becomes a 2014 Volt.
And given the news that came out today on the 3.0 settlement, I cannot wait to turn in my Touareg.
Original cost for the two VW cars = $74k
Total of buybacks = $68.6k (edited)
Cost of two replacements = $38k
Moving on!

Edited: added Bosch payout, Goodwill payments and modified Touareg payout

Nice. My wife has had her CPO X1 for about a 1 1/2 months now and likes it much better than the JSW which was turned in a week ago. I have to laugh because she was initially against getting a BMW.
I'm impressed by the 8 speed transmission. Very smooth always seems to have the right gear selected for the situation. Much better than the 6 speed I've got in my 328. Down side is that the fuel economy of the X1 is comparatively low but not bad for an AWD car with a torquey 240 HP engine.

I don't! Got to love January weather where the temps range from single digits to 70s and where a dusting of snow shuts the city down for several days.

Oh fun!!!!!
I won't lie, i'm 110% jealous. That is my dream ride - but alas, I drive too much for kid appointments that it isn't financially viable for me to even consider it. It will kill my current budget to give up my TDI.
One day, one day though - it will be mine!!!!
My kids love riding in mine. Mileage is not great though.

Ha! It gets the same mileage as my 4 door Blazer did, so yeah, I'll definitely miss the mileage. But I've missed my Blazer since the day I traded it in. We are planning on some easy trail adventures, really looking forward to it.

Nice X1 : I went for black. Love it! I would have liked a manual though.

Thanks! I agree with the other poster tho -- the 8 speed is nice. Very responsive. Harder to find manuals these days particularly in a non-economy car.

I recently drove from Vermont to "Chris Christie Land" (New Jersey). Five miles within the NJ border, three lanes of traffic came to a crawl for four miles. Christie had sent out some guys to "fill potholes" on the Interstate, and three lanes had to squeeze into one.

I was glad that I gave up on manual transmissions 30 years ago, when I was still a NJ resident.

tell the Gov to send his crews down to Okieville

Try driving on 3-4-5 lane inter city roads, trying to dodge continuous deep pot holes.

There are roads where I live, I just avoid, to protect my car. Car and tire repair is a nightmare ~~ particular for the FAST MOVERS:D

Being someone who retired after 35 years in a State DOT I can appreciate that. People aren't willing to raise the fuel tax to cover the cost. Until they do the public can expect only more of the same.

We have a FED gas (fuel) tax, and we have an Okie fuel tax

Have lived in same location for decades.

Not too sure what the tax per gallon is here, but have never seen a correlation of better roads, after a TAX increase.

Have no idea where the $$$$s go

One thing for sure, we pay more on Turn Pike fees to go to and from Tulsa - OKC than fuel TAX

Car Turn pike fee to and from Tulsa to OKC is $10,00

Total cost of diesel for me to go there and back is only 'bout the same $10.00:eek:

If we drive wife's RAV4 LIMITED same trip in fuel (gas) is 'bout $15.00 PLUS TP fees of $10.00

Consider yourself lucky in regards to those tolls. I think they are much higher here in the NYC area

My state last increased it's fuel tax in 1987 and the Feds last increased theirs in 1994. Since then the cost of a ton of asphalt paving has increased from about $30 a ton to about $85 to $110 a ton depending on the grade of pavement selected. Other costs have also increased proportionally. This results in the revenue stream to my state DOT being more or less the same number of dollars per year since the early 90's. Can you pay your bills on the salary you had in 1994? One suggestion, if your states fuel tax goes into the general fund rather than a separate dedicated fund that the governor is forbidden by law to rob in order to cover other short falls then you have a problem. BTW turnpikes are built by private companies who have to cover the full cost, of construction and maintenance but also are allowed to collect a profit.

.... as Oklahoma is a poor state, with wages in the sewer compared to North East States, the road taxes are quiet regressive

Poor Okie teachers, even after 35-40 years of service, top out at 'bout the high $40-55 thousand range ~ Shameful

I give the advantage to us when it comes to the cost of housing. And cost of GASOLINE ~ wife paid $1.99 on her last fill up

Would love to see the National minimum wage at $15. Believe it or not ~~ Beginning Oklahoma Teachers might get a few hundred dollar starting raise:D

There is funny (sic) issue regarding a profit

Okies pay a vicious Turnpike cost as we use the our own roads

On the other hand, the ROAD KILLERS ( 18 wheel trucks) pay a LOT MORE

When we travel ~~ seems there is about 1 truck for every 2-4 cars ~~ depending on the day - time - etc.

Guessing the trucks are paying 'bout the same (or even more) than cars ~ in total fees.

Guessing the cars are more local (Oklahoma persons) and for the most part, the trucks are just in the "fly over stage" of delivery

Meaning the locals are being subsidized by out staters ~ rather like all states-cities have a room tax on motel and hotels

In filming a piece on potholes in SC, the news crew hit one hard enough to blow out their front tire.

One thing to keep in mind is that in most states fuel taxes only cover less than half of the required maintenance costs. The rest comes out of property and sales taxes.
