If you are considering buyback which cars are you looking at as replacements?

Just made and offer on a 14 Acura TL SH-AWD and it was accepted.... I guess that answers that! Not sure how a 305hp 3.7l V6 pollutes less than a 2.0 liter TDI.... It'll at least be fun to drive....
Not less, just differently and within arbitrary legal limits :D

I picked up a used Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0T with around 16k miles on it at a great price to replace my '14 Jetta SportWagen. I specifically wanted the car, because it serves as a "family car" while still doing 0 to 60 in 6.4 seconds. I figured if I'm going to drive another crossover, it might as well have some balls. I had to adjust to the plasticky interior and cloth seats again. I do miss the SportWagen and looking forward to the day when I pick up another used TDI as my personal commuter car. I have my eyes on the Golf, as I won't need another "family car."
I thought that about my Grand Cherokee too until I drove my brother in law's F Type R

RIGHT!
I've been researching them at local dealers and building them online and...WOWSER!
But isn't it funny? I could pull into work in a 40K GMC Canyon and no one would blink an eye but if I pull into work with a recently off lease 40K Audi I'll get "hate".
We were discussing this over Christmas Dinner with my family and the perception of brand names.

Funny how that works. I went through the same thought process in my search. I could get a brand new Jeep, Toyota, Dodge, etc for the same price as a lightly used BMW with a great warranty. I finally just said F it...at the end of the day a car is a car and all the matters is that I'm happy. It's all about me...ha!

Plus, this whole diesel fiasco gave us the opportunity to consider things we may not have normally.

If this wasn't happening, I'd probably be driving my car for another 6 years.

I plan on Trading in the 14 Passat

In favor of a 17 Subaru Limited with Eyesight and all the goodies.
I am getting about 14K back on the settlement, Suby is Offering 0 interest loans payment should be less on this than it was for the passat.

I wanted to keep passat Size but have more Space in the trunk like a hatch. Sportwagen/Alltrack too small for back seat passengers and everything else is too pricey

If you are looking for a second or third car for local errands, there are some real deals on CPO EV cars coming off lease. Around here, you can pick up a 2014 or 2015 Nissan Leaf with under 25K miles, that had a MSRP of over $30k, for under $10k.

These cars depreciate very quickly in the first years. This is because while the first buyer gets a big tax credit and other incentives, second owners do not get such goodies. And because of technological obsolescence, the new adopters who leased these cars in the first place are moving on to a newer, more advanced model.

Because I am retired and live in a state with no EV incentives, the tax credit (which cannot be carried forward) is not of much value to me. So a used one makes more sense.
EV(s)

Crapppollla from the get go ~~ at the cost to TAX payers:mad:

add to that the cash for cluuunnnkkers

VW of Olympia has a few new Golf Wolfsburgs at 18900 with automatics. Knock off 1100 for a 5 speed and I would be interested at <18000. That would be worth the drive for me.

Might be better off showing that to a local dealership and talking them into matching the price so you can save yourself a few thousand dollars in taxes.

I do plan on such a tactic on January 30th, my buyback appointment date. I think that Washington may waive the sales tax for Oregon buyers, but I'm not 100% sure about that. In any event, point taken.

I've bought a few cars in states other than that in which they were to be registered. In all cases, one of two things happened: (1) the dealer charged the appropriate tax for where it was going to be registered, or (2) the dealer didn't charge any tax at all, and left it up to me to take care of that with my state.

Only way to go.

I bought mine in MO ~~ paid zip in TT&L

Then bought and paid the TT&L in Oklahoma

Any thing I would have paid in MO would never see the light of day for me.

I have also bought out of state vehicles and both of those have happened to me. I would add one more, get charged the local tax rate and have to pay the difference when I titled/registered in my state.

Scroll down to the fine print. It looks like it says to add $699 processing fee and freight which is $820. That brings the price up to $18,937.
I researched Sheehy and Lindsay heavily. I think in the end if I was buying new Lindsay was going to be the most upfront about their prices and had good customer feedback. I was going to buy from a salesman named Raj. Knowledgeable and good follow up.

I believe they had Wolfsburgs for around 17k. The site not showing that price but I would call and I bet their price will be very good.

Don't see why, unless the dealer's unusually crooked. I bought one of my cars in SC. They figured the proper tax, title, and tag fees for my county in GA and paid them (granted, they paid them late, but they then covered the penalties). I got the plate and registration in the mail.

Ended up with a pristine certified 2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium. It has been difficult to get prices from VW dealers on a new vehicle without going in for the 'sell.' My wife really wanted the Outback anyways. Happy wife...happy life.

VW dealership by me flat out would not give me a price over the phone. Kept asking when I could stop in.

My wife drives an Outback. She absolutely loves it.

As I have never let someone (anyone) take my money regarding a non-local car purchase ~~ I never had any issues to deal with.

Guess every state is different ~~ here is Okieville ~~ we just go to the close by TAG Agency and get 'er done. ONCE :D

BTW ~~ I did come in contact a while back, with that situation ~~ We did not come to terms on both issues of OTDP or the TT&L issue. Better safe than sorry:eek:

Last 3 new cars we bought, There were delivered to drive way. No deposit, no Credit Card either

Respectfully Makr,

Local dealers charge local buyers MORE than out of town buyers (over the phone)

My local vw dealer ask 'bout $4,000 more than what I paid for my 2015 ~~ and his selection was almost NIL on my needs

Bought mine 'bout 356 miles "down the road motors," in MO. -- It was delivered to my drive way

Promise you, if you contact (a few out of town dealers) you will get more attention. Good luck

So what is the deal with buying cars over state lines? I'm in CT and think it is a pain at least from what I know, but never done it before. I'm on to buying my second car, for whenever I turn my Passat in..

I'm in CT as well. You're usually on the hook for registering and paying sales tax in your state. A lot of times you can still finance the sales tax then the dealer cuts you a check for that amount to pay the DMV. It's definitely more of a pain than just letting a CT dealer do it all right there while you wait. That's worth a little extra in the sale price to not have to deal with the miserable CT DMV.

Only speaking for myself

On my 2015 VW Golf TDI DSG ~~ Local dealer was much higher, very limited inventory choices, and naturally wanted to have you come in "for a test drive."

Price (and selection) was my only real consideration. So I shopped several dealers in (3) states

If you are talking about the TT&L situation, in your post ~~ personally I will never pay funds to another state. As here in Oklahoma your have to both insure and get your TT&L in quick order or pay fines:mad:

It may only be MA, and a couple other states, but you can't pass cash for title and car, and then drive legally back over state lines. Technically, you're supposed to buy it first, take the title to DMV, get registration, and then return to get the (now legal) car. Evidently, nobody thought about how inconvenient this was. The only other way is to wire tens of thousands to your seller, plus a few clams of postage, and trust:
-the car is fine, no scratch / dent
-the car even exists
-the title shows up before you drive/fly back

I think this had less to do with heavy regs, in MA, than it did the power of the dealer lobby, looking to discourage personal sales beyond the bogus sales tax credit (welfare) they already get.

But you should be able to buy in the other state, get that state's temporary registration (so it is now registered), and drive that back. That falls under the constitutional provisions of recognizing other state's licenses and registrations.

Note that this is different than the situation you outlined, which is buy a car (presumably used as the Title is involved and usually there is no Title until one has been issued by the state it was sold in when the dealer submits the manufacturers certificate of origin) and drive it back without registration just title.

I, as a Vermont resident, have purchased vehicles three times from out of state dealers (first time, New Jersey, second time, Pennsylvania, third time, New Hampshire) without getting a Vermont title or paying sales tax before driving the car home. In NJ & PA, I did not pay NJ or PA sales tax, and NH has no sales tax.

In both instances, I was issued a "manufacturers certificate of origin" by the dealer, and issued a temporary plate from the state where the dealer was located. I drove the car home, then went to my Vermont DMV with my "certificate of origin" and my sales documents indicating what I paid for the car. I paid Vermont sales tax directly on the purchase price of the car, got a registration and plates, and the Vermont title followed in the mail from Vermont DMV.

I realize other states may work differently.

# 1 ~~ had zero trouble gettng my car from MO to Tulsa

# 2 ~~ gave zero money, nor Credit Card to dealer

# 3 ~~ Here we can sell 'em (personal sales) on the curb ~~ might be a state limit, ~~ 5 (?) 6 (?) per year Do not know for sure -- most I ever did was in 2015 -- Two cars

Thanks for your input

We (wife and I) had similar situations.

Only difference was, we had the (3) cars delivered to home.
