The size and layout of the Outback suits us better, the cargo area is longer than the Forrester. The DSG service is really irrelivant since it is not the transmission option anyway.
I thought it was close to the same length wise in the cargo area.

BTW, the DSG comment in my last post was simply pointing out that the service interval is every 40k not 20k as you said in your post.
I really wish the WRX wagon was still available.
The new WRX has less leg and headroom compared to the older WRX. And I completely agree, I want that wagon back!

I am definitely looking at replacing our JSW 2010 this year, not so much for the emission problem but for the waterlock problem and the lack of warranty. The rust on the car should be repaired under warranty, hopefully in June, we have filed the warranty claim about 6 months ago.
I am looking at a similar sized or sligthly smaller wagon one year old to get the remaining warranty without paying the premium for a new car.
The open trunk door should protect from the rain the person handling the cargo. Cargo handling is a must for my wife who drives the car and is a medical practitioner with equipment to carry in and out of patients homes.
Dealerships in our area are: Mazda, Kia, VW, Honda, Subaru, Hyundai, Toyota, Ford and another US brand I don't remember.
Maybe a Honda Fit. Any model suggestions from the brands mentioned above?

If cargo space is a priority, I don't think a Honda Fit would be at the top of my list.

Volume between the Forrester and Outback is about the same, but the Forrester is shorter in length and taller, which is fine but not for what I need.

If Subie brought the Levorg over...wow.

That Levorg looks very nice indeed! Exterior it really looks sharp. Interior looks like a cross between a mk6 vw golf and a honda accord.

I'm really surprised to hear so many people considering Subarus. They have had tons of problems with head gaskets and most recently a class action lawsuit due to excedingly high oil consumption issues. I know a guy who was a hard core Subaru fan boy for years and has sworn them off due to all the recent engine problems.

They have had tons of problems with head gaskets and most recently a class action lawsuit due to excedingly high oil consumption issues. I know a guy who was a hard core Subaru fan boy for years and has sworn them off due to all the recent engine problems.
I have had 2 Subarus and they both needed head gaskets around 100K. My favorite and most reliable technician told me that I could count on head gasket jobs every 100K. So no more Subies for me!

I have had over a dozen Subies, and two head gaskets in the bunch. They still have the best AWD system and a ton of space inside.

The only downside is that it's only available with a CVT transmission in the UK. Kinda shocking since the brits love manual transmissions. Which means that if it makes it here it'll also be available with only the CVT.

On the plus side the CVT that Subaru has isn't all that bad really.

I'm considering the Forester for new car replacement, only because I can fit.
I'm also thinking about a previous gen WRX wagon... We'll see.

I'll bet the super low weight is part of the reason for the high reported usage with some of the newer cars.

The low viscosity is to improve MPGs and such.

FWIW I used 5w20 in my last car. Dealership only used regular dino oil. I always went for the good stuff and used castrol syntec and pureone oil filters. The K24 honda engine is known for it's high oil usage. I think that's because many folks are using regular oil. I always used the synthetic stuff and it burned very little to no oil. Maybe 1/4-1/3 qt per 6-8k mile oil changes :cool:

I had a 1999 Forester manual xmission that I gave to my daughter when I bought my JSW. Had around 100K miles on it. She put another 50K miles on it before getting a great trade-in on a Mazda CX-5. It had some issues but the head gasket was not one of them.

The Forester made my short 2003 list (loved the 5M, clutch and Hillholder). Non-purchase reason long forgotten (but CU sure gives Forester stellar ratings - almost all red dots 2009-2014).

Fast forward to present day: a 2016/17 (who knows when VW/EPA/CARB will come together?) Golf 1.8 5M wagon looks better and better..................

Pretty sure the head gasket issue was fixed around 2004.

Not to say they are zero issues since then...but mostly not.

I do remember some static around that time. In fact my uncle had a 2000 outback that seemed to be loosing oil after about 80k miles. I do know they fixed alot of those issues since then.

To that I'll add that I went to carmax today simply to sit in several cars. My takeaway was pretty much unchanged from before (vw fit me best). However the shocking thing is that many chevys fit me very well too.

To those thinking of the Honda Fit... I had one for 4 years, great car -that being said. It will feel cheap and the ride is like that of a shopping cart compared to the VW. There really is not a car in this class that compares to the VW. Hard to replace.

I had thought that too, but I talked to my buddy who sells Subies and it is still an issue.
I am not here to bash other brands or cars. However I had a '82 Subie GL 4dr and I still think of that car. I drove it 10 years. I am sorry I traded it in. I loved that car. HOWEVER it was a very simple push rod engine manual 5 speed, no air bags, no anti lock, and recall it had manual windows. That car drove nice and got 32 MPG I recall.

Subie today is not so simple, OH Cam, turbos, AWD... A friend on a trip had a turbo blow and lunch the engine. Had it towed. Totaled engine, she traded it in for a used Hyundai to get home.

Recent recall in last few days on 2105/2016 Subie, serious. Recall states DO NOT DRIVE IT,

Subaru is not a inexpensive cars, and they get average to below average MPG. I love the brand but they are not problem free as they were in the day. I loved my '82 GL.

Agree. The new Civics look nice, and they even went to turbo for economy. However I drove Japanese cars for 27 years. I have been driving German for only 5 years. Going back to Japanese will be a let down, especially in economy box. My last car was a 2dr Acura Legend. Nice ride. I never could go to 4 banger in gas ICE. Then I drove the TDI with the torque of a V6 and better Econ than a I4 gas... I was sold. Of course it has been a rough honeymoon.

I've been thinking about this, so if I buy up a bunch used TDI 2010+; could I potentially stand to make a profit during the buyback period?

Worst case scenario I break even or end up with multiple cars that last forever.

ONLY MY 2015-2016 outback wagons and legacy sedans are effected. All other models are fine from what I've read.

$40,000 for an extended cab, 4wd and nodidn't er options, ouch.
I hear you. Pickups used to be fairly economical. But they didn't have leather interiors, and the million other unnecessary luxury features now available in most trucks. That said, is $40k the msrp? I don't know anyone who pays anything close to msrp for domestic trucks.
