Newbie here, just got this and was told it's not a TDI so please take a peek all I know it has 1985 painted on valve cover like a salvage yard would have put there. A member here said it was a 1600 and 54hp. If that's all it's putting out I'm amazed at how well it pushes this truck around!

There are just too many to list....
The MF engine code 1.6L turbodiesel makes 68hp. The 1V engine code 1.6L turbodiesel makes 59hp. There is also a 1.9L turbodiesel, code AAZ, that makes 75hp, that was sold in Canada.

You can find the engine size in the casting in the block on the turbo side.

That is a great find! What gearbox is it using?

That is awesome indeed! Would love to see some pix of it running. It is definitely a 1.6, you can tell by the shape and style of the valve cover (If it is the original valve cover that is).

It's got the stock S-10 5spd, a bit tall geared for the little diesel but ok. If I lived in the mountains I'd be in trouble! Thanx for the info.

Well it is definitely a 1.6 head.. but who knows if it is a 1.6 bottom.. Could be a bastard engine being what it is swapped in to right? lol

Yes under the turbo on the block, there should be a casting near the tranny end that will say 1.6D

Yes. Fred likes to keep this place family friendly so he has quite a few words and abbreviations censored out.

Nice trade though. Let us know what you find for engine and mileage.

Any idea how it mates up to transmission?

Does it use some kind of adapter plate?

Any idea if the clutch / flywheel is VW or chev?

This is a cool swap, I have an S10 available to me and three VW diesel engines.

Yes Jiggs it does have a adpt. plate made of alluminum, I would guess it has VW flywheel and presure plate with S-10 clutch disc.

It's running better after giving it some boost and just turned some more fuel into the the lil beast. Next I will shim the govenor up and intercool it. It's fine now but I just like to tinker.

That is a super awesome find! I had a dodge truck with a factory 4.0L mitsubishi diesel, and while that was a factory vehicle, I think something like this would have fit my fancy much more.

Hopefully it stays on the road for the while. If I had the resources I would certainly attempt to make one myself.

This is really cool! I have a '91 S-10 and have toyed with the idea of a diesel swap but my lack of welding/fabrication skills means I'd be farming a lot of work out.

What year is that truck, and was it originally a 2.2 or 4.3? (If you don't know, the 8th digit of the VIN is engine code -- Z for 4.3 TBI, W or X for 4.3 Vortec, 4 or 5 for 2.2L.) By the interior and the sealed-beam headlights it has to be in the 94-97 range.

I'm especially interested in that adapter plate, and if it was a one-off or someone sells them, although it may or may not be useful to me, as the 2.2 and 4.3 have different bolt patterns. 2.2 is the "GM Metric", also used by the 60-degree V6 engines, and the 4.3 uses the small-block Chevy pattern (350 etc.), which has a ton of powerful transmission options.

When you say the gearing is a bit tall do you mean the RPMs are too high for a Diesel, or the other way, where you have to downshift to get any power? Besides transmission gearing, there's also rear-end gearing to consider. The RPO codes on the glove box label will tell you the rear-end ratio, assuming it still has the stock axle (they start with GT or GU, online lookups exist). A previous owner swapped out my truck's stock 2.73 rear end for a 3.42; power is great but mileage suffers, and I think the gearing is too steep -- 1st gear is very short but 2nd is a hair too high to start in, and it turns 2600 RPM at 70 mph. Probably would be perfect for something like an ALH though.
