In the flesh the new Passat TDI is a very impressive vehicle.
The White colour suits the new shape and I thinke VW's got a real winner in both the Jetta & Passat and should do very well.

I sat in the TDI and the interior looks more upscale than the Jetta but all the switches and buttons are similar even the steering wheel is the same.

It also has a lip spoiler which looks awesome.
And the interior has carbon fibre on the dash instead of wood.

Unlike the Taureg it does not need a DEF tank so that should be a + for less maintenance.

I should think the 2.0L TDI is powerful enough to power the larger vehicle.
I told my CA to call me when he gets one in so I can do a test drive.

I say this North American Passat is probably very close in dry weight to a Golf wagon? Is that still the 140hp CR engine?

Yes it's the same engine powering a much larger vehicle and yielding an impressive range of 800 miles as claimed by VW.

If VW release a Passat Wagon TDI I'd buy one in a heart beat.

It does have a DEF tank. However Urea SCR engines have lower fuel consumption than these without. (Hello Golf, Jetta, Ram, and Maxxforces)

SCR is the dominant method of meeting 2010+ emissions for on-highway diesels, so finding DEF should be easier.

From places I see, Adblue consumption seems to be about 1-3% of diesel fuel consumption.

Oh man.. keep your 335d, it's really a class above VW.

i sat in the white TDI as well and it looked just like my Jetta. Only diff to me was the centre clock, steering wheel and MFD cluster.

i had to remind my friend that we actually did visit the Passat, bc he thought it was just the Jetta like my car.

I have no intention of getting rid of my 335d.
I was going to get the new E350 Blue Tec or wait for the 535d which may come in 2012 0r 2013.
But a test drive of the E350BT did not find it as exciting as the 335d so I decided to get the 2011 Jetta TDI as a second car which is 1/3 the cost of the E350BT and has the same performance!

Right now since it's Winter, I'm driving my TDI more and the D spends more time in the garage till Spring comes then it's let loose.

My problem is if I only drive the 335d it'll be out of warranty in under 2 years!
I'd be interested in the Passat wagon TDI mainly for it's driving range and storage space.

I checked the trunk of the Passat and found a spare tire where a DEF tank would have been so I assume that like the Jetta since it's the same engine there is no need for the DEF?
Do you have any information on the location of the DEF tank in the Passat?

I peek into the M-B E350 BT and in the trunk where the spare tire is normally located I found a DEF tank.

In my 335d there is a small round cover on the driver's side near the trunk for the refill of the DEF. Currently the refill is done at every oil change (17,000 KM or so) and is at no charge under BMW's 80,000 KM coverage.
But after that I believe it's around $200 or I can buy the refill from Canadian Tire and do it myself but have to find out how to reset the on board computer to register the refill.

DEF tank is on the passenger side of the trunk, under a plastic cover IIRC.

(I found it on one at NAIAS...)

Saw it at the Toronto show too and fell in love. Beautiful car, great interior (one we are used to seeing) and really well proportioned in the sea of overly-bulbous Camry, Accord, Taurus etc. I hope they bring lots of TDIs and lots of manual transmissions!

Weird how VW is copying Ford and GM styling cues so heavily.
That's because the new Jetta & Passat are designed in the US for the US market?
And Ameriacns love huge cars like the Buick Lacrosse... that's why the 2008 Honda Accord became so bloated!

Tell me about it. The Accord is a fat, ugly pig. The 'muricanized Jetta & Passat's front ends look like low end Ford and GM offerings. F.U.G.L.Y.
