To make a very long story short, I put a thumb tack size hole in my oil pan without realizing it. drove about 2 km then idled it for 5 min or more before I noticed the car seemed VERY loud and was smoking (was idling while I was inside my friends house).

After the car sit for 20 min i fired it up for litterally a second to see if it would still run and it did, it was just loud.

My question is, What damage do you think I did and shoud I just put a new pan on, fresh oil in and see what happens or am I looking at a rebuild?

When the pan is off, pull some rod and main caps to look at the bearings, though loud isnt a good sign.

As Said Above, pull some rod and main caps and inspect for dry running wear. But and motor that runs out of oil will he considerably loud because oil will null out a lot of the sound that a diesel makes. You will definitely want to check the camshaft and followers as well. You may very well be looking at an engine overhaul(new bearings throughout and new camshaft whilst its out... But if you got lucky and run a high qaulity oil, it may have kept the surfaces lubricated enough to prevent major wear. At idle there is almost no stress on main and end bearings.

Good luck

This is hardest on the turbocharger in the short run, especially if the engine is loaded (the turbo spools up when loading the engine). An extended idle without (much) oil may not have hurt the turbo much.

Oil pan is ordered and will be here in 2 days but is there anyway I could plug the hole to see how it runs once i put oil in it?

You kind of RAN the car without oil....

Sorry had to correct the grammar. It's not a text.

If the oil light was not of then it's fine. Honestly, I've seen a lot of cars driven with less than a quart in them for 10-12 miles and they survived. Two of them I see regularly and both are over 60K miles post incident.

Just wait. Or start the inspection process. You'll need new rod end cap bolts. And a torque wrench.

No worries.

Good luck with it.

You didn't say if it was bone dry or not.

I'm really not sure...
I shut the car off and then checked the oil and the stick was dry.
I know the doesn't mean there is nothing left in the engine though...
It was after i dumped 3L in to it that i thought to look under the car and then I found the puddle.
There was still oil dripping out all the way from where it happened. So considering the rate it was streaming out, I think it run out while sitting there idling

Wow! I've been following this Thread to see the outcome! I'm glad it turned out okay.

I suspect the rattling you heard was the lifters due to low/no oil pressure.

Well, this sort of goes with the saying that an engine receives the most damage at start-up due to ...........well, fill in the blanks yourself! All the moving parts retain oil and are lubed more than enough at start up to protect them...........that's what saved your "little golf."
