I had to tell someone other than my wife and my dad. I knew you would want to hear about it.

Our exhaust broke about 2-3 months ago right behind the Cat. Me being financially prudent (ie: cheap) I have waited to fix it until now. So I dig out the ramps and the welder, climber under it and was going to just weld it back together. Then I thought, why not remove the innerds of the cat before I weld it together? Good idea self! So after about 1 hour and a electric drill with a old spade bit it was all cleaned out. I welded it back together and took her for a spin. I was impressed with the seemingly increase in performance.

Next is modifying the muffler - Any thoughts on how to go about this?

 I knew there was a stray problem, but using a drill and spade? Seems harsh.

I don't condone this modification as the impact it will have on your emissions (and environment) is far greater than the "gains" you get from your placebo. I understand a free flowing exhaust is great and all, but why not just use a high flow cat? I mean, if soot is already an issue with diesels, this obviously makes it much worse... just my opinion and most likely those with asthma in cities that have horrible air quality. Thanks for the thought though.

As of today I haven't seen in decrease in performance at all. Maybe that is just wishful thinking. I haven't noticed anymore soot coming out of the tailpipe, but it does have a nicer tone to it.

If you think the insides of the cat had a bad day you ought to the spade bit - she's a little rounded on the point and the corners.
