Hybrid turbo reconditioning/replacement/upgrade options

Hi all,

I have a 2002 Audi A3 tdi quattro with various mods including a Turbo Technics hybrid turbo (GT1752), large FMIC and 2.5" SS exhaust (I believe it's running standard injectors). It's currently mapped to 226bhp.

The turbo is worn and leaking so needs to be replaced or reconditioned. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on companies who could recondition it or supply a new core? (I will be speaking to Turbo Technics but wondered if there is anyone who might be cheaper but still good quality)

I'm also looking into the options for a bit of an upgrade to something a bit bigger. From what I've read, it looks like the existing turbo is probably about at it's limit so what would people suggest in terms of a realistic/modest upgrade? (I understand that I will need a remap and maybe injector nozzles).

TIA

(BTW I'm in the UK)

I suggest you go for a stock turbo gtb1756vk, while ok 10 years ago, these type of hybrids are past their best and turbo tech has moved a lot in the last decade...clipping turbine blades to stop it from overspeeding is 90's tech and a poor match between turbine and compressor wheel...

Thanks for the reply.

The GTB1756vk looks like a good spec but I've only seen them welded onto the stock manifold. I'm a bit wary of a welded manifold in case it cracks or gives problems once it's installed. The existing turbo has been on there around 100k miles plus so I'd like to replace it with something that will last as long.

Is the GTB1756vk available with a stock or unwelded manifold? Or would it be a case of using a tubular manifold if I want to avoid a welded casting?

Profidiesel offer a manifold kit so you can use a standalone GTB1756/2060/2260 turbo on a cast manifold. It also means you can upgrade or swap the turbo for another 1756, 2060 or 2260 at a later date should it take your fancy.

I believe the flange is welded onto the manifold, however I believe they have a lifetime warranty, and being separate to the turbo if it fails (though unlikely) it'll be cheaper to take off and swap, and you wont have to replace the whole turbo housing + manifold.

As above, either buy profidiesel manifold or buy flanges from darkside developments and a couple of bends from ebay/metal supplier and get someone with experience to tig weld a log type manifold for you, it will replicate the more common cast manifolds while -as pointed above- you will be able to use whichever turbo you fancy !

As with regards to the hybrid turbo, you can get in touch with Adam at Pioneering Performance, he is a sound bloke and builds quality turbos. I had some of his hybrids run over 7 years without skipping a beat in 300Bhp engines wile being driven hard daily !
