hi All,

I have a junkyard motor without any idntifying sticker... how do I tell if it's an AHU or 1Z motor?

Any there any obvious clues without taking the engine apart?

thanks,
Steve

Look for the EGR cooler. Quickest way to tell. 1Zs don't have one. If the intake manifold isn't on the car it may be a bit harder to tell.

just above the oil filter stand there's a machined flat spot that will have the engine code stamped on it.

Hi all,

thanks for the replies!

It's torn down a bit, but it the code is actually STAMPED on the block, I'll know what I have from that...

regards,
Steve

I have a 97 A3 TDI with a 1Z engine that has the coolant cooled EGR. I have never been able to find the coolant hoses for the cooler. I thought this car should have had an AHU, but it clearly shows 1Z on the engine. Even the dealers couldn't find them listed anywhere. Another weird VW anomaly!! Oh well the almost 20 year old originals are still hanging in there.

OK,... WHICH 1Z is it?

The transition from 1Z to AHU happened in steps. Some 1Z have AHU valves and guides. Some have AHU oil squirters. As mentioned some 1Z have the water cooled EGR.
Not all the changes happened at one time so there are a series of 'mongrel' half-breed 1Z out there from the factory.
The true AHU are alike, but several combinations were used on the 1Z.

And the build sticker in the trunk doesn't help, nor will the casting on the block. The engine serial number is needed to determine what components are inside. That existed on the cam belt cover, but if the cover has been replaced, or more frequently if the sticker has worn/eroded away, all guesses are off.

All quite interesting, but really unnecessary if he doesn't need to crack it open. And even then all will be revealed once it is opened up, if the need arises.
