HPFP or N290

Okay I think we all got the extended warranty on the HPFP up to 120K miles for the 09' to whatever, I have an 09. I have had a problem on cold start with engine up slope angle for some time. If the engine[front] of the car is lower usually no problem. Lately on startup getting the 000135 [PO87] "fuel rail system pressure too low". Fuel filter changed regularly no noticeable metal at all. I have 7K left till I hit 120K then out of warranty. Question; If I were to take it to the dealer and they find out it is the N290 fuel metering valve, and they do not supply that as a separate part in the US would that not entitle me to a new HPFP under warranty? Will they warranty the HPFP on a running vehicle, or only total failure where everything goes down the crapper. What say you guys. Thanks for any input.

Are your electric lift and aux pumps working? If you have VCDS you can run each one and check. My friends Jetta was intermittently throwing that code and it turned out during previous maintenance the mechanic cross "wired" the fuel lines from the lift pump, so instead of pumping fuel up the the engine, it was sucking fuel. Perhaps a failed electric pump might do the same?

I replaced the fuel metering valve in my HPFP in 5 minutes. It is an easy fix (and it fixed my fuel pressure problems). The only hard part is finding the part. This thread mentions a source in England that will sell you a fuel metering valve for around $100.

This thread also shows the Bosch part number for that part, you might be able to find one on eBay or somewhere else. Good Luck!

Flyboy I do have VCDS now and had changed out tank lift pump prior. JSWTD from your prior input you had stated the availability of the N290 from Europe, I get that. My point is in the states it is considered part of HPFP if the dealer will not supply it separately, so if they find the N290 failed would I not be entitled to a new HPFP under warranty. This would solve my problem and also give me security knowing I now have a new high pressure fuel pump and not be looking at $7K when it blows apart after warranty expires. Is this scenario an acceptable expectation on my part from the dealer, is what I am really asking?

I somehow missed the fact that you are still under warranty. You are correct, I would let VW replace the HPFP. It is their own dumb fault that they do not stock the part to actually fix this problem quickly and cheaply. Let them pay for their own stupidity (for a change).
