So Im aware of the HPFP failures, but havent been follwing the current events THAT closely....

So I had a customer approach me who is looking at purchasing a 09 JSW that has had some major problems after getting GASOLNIE in the fuel system. I havent seen the car personally, so Im only going by second hand info.

I looked at an insurance estimate that had an extensive parts list that included (some larger items)
-All fuel system components
-Re-man engine
-Turbo

Car was diagnosed by a VW dealer and they came up with that extensive list of parts that needed to be replaced.

So Im asking myself what am I missing....why would the car need a re-man engine AND a new turbo if the HPFP took a dump?

Could the pump seize and halt the drive from the engine? Im not that familiar with the CR engines yet, so Im open to ideas.

Only curious thing is that the customer brought a shredded up piece of the serp. belt that came off the car. He said the cranking sounded even, not monotone or lumpy like the valvetrain had issues, but I didnt hear it myself....?

Thanks!

Usually when the HPFP pump fail under normal contamination conditions, the car just stalls. Ask him to check the oil in the crankcase as it sounds like it ran out and the engine seized, which would probably do damage to the turbo (lack of oil).

I'm not 100% on this, but metal flakes from a grenaded HPFP can invade the cylinders resulting in block damage and oil reservoir contamination. I'd be ecstatic to receive a new motor (and fuel system) after a HPFP failure.

None any more. My heart couldn't take it.

Through the injectors? Even at 26,000psi, I doubt it, but I guess I could be wrong.

Im having a hard time with this one too.....I just dont see how it could be explained. Maybe it was just dealer greed wanting to rack up a $10k bill.

This car sounds like a candidate for "redneck HPFP repair" technique. Buy dead car. Send injectors out for new nozzles and cleaning. Send rail and plumbing out for cleaning. Replace hpfp. Clean out filter and fuel tank. Put back on road.

Can't see the base engine being trashed from this, but worth checking it anyway...

redneck HPFP repair
I would not be so disparaging of the red necks in this case. I have never read of an engine being taken out by the HPFP implosion. A disintegrated turbo "might" get metal into the air intake and then into the manifold and cylinders, but not the High Pressure Fuel Pump. If this vehicle can be bought cheap enough, after inspection of the motor oil just to be sure, it is worth a try just replacing the pump and it's plumbing.

Wasn't there a guy on here about 2-3 months ago that had the dealer running wild tossing parts in his car? I remember at least a new fuel system and a new tubo going in and the dealer still had no idea what was going on. Maybe this car has resurfaced

Although rare what you may be seeing is two or three failures at once and none of them may be related, or just two related and one non-related.

The CRs are seeing a couple of things happen:
1..The HPFP issues that take out the whole injection system.
a..Gasoline
b..Algae / bacteria
c..Water in fuel
2..The goo / water in the intercooler area.
a..Some few have injested water and taken out the engine. (rods bent etc)
b..I am getting the idea that a smaller amount of injested water can even stress / deform a head gasket and give antifreeze leakage that shows coolant in the UOA. Not enough damage to really destroy the engine but enough to hurt things. I am speculating here, but water in the wrong places causes real problems, whether in fuel or engine lubricant.
c..Could a little water along cause Fe levels to be high (rust in cylinders)?
3..Water in the fuel can shut down the engine (almost the same as HPFP)
a..The two hole filter housing can keep water in the housing if not drained (to show up later or grow bad things)
b..Any water in the one hole filter housing has to go through the HPFP either slowly or with a stall. The worse case is the water causes a roller / cam failure in the HPFP (see #1 above).

A just right combination of some of this could leave a person with an engine and fuel system destroyed. I know a .000001% chance of happening. LOL Kind of reminds you of having a PD cam failure and then transmission problems.

I think the fact that it was an insurance estimate rather than a warranty claim or repair estimate is why its so extensive. If the insurer accepts the claim, they're not likely to dispute a dealer's recommendations. I think if the owner had asked for a repair estimate, it would be less extensive. This grenading pump issue is making me reconsider whether I want to keep my JSW. Same kind of risk kept me from buying a used Porsche 911; their pre-06 engines had a bad habit of grenading too.
