\"Howes Lubricator\" Diesel Treat - Canadian Product

Newbie here and I bought an anti-gel diesel treatment at the local BP truck stop. The product is called "Howes Lubricator" Diesel Treat and is produced in Canada. The half gallon container was $9.99 and is sufficient to treat 250 gallons. The guys at BP say alot of the truckers buy the product....Anybody have experience with the product or have comments?? The product onlys says it is "highly refined petroleum."

BTW, I live at 2000 ft. elevation in the Blue Ridge mountains and we do have gelling issues here with our diesels in the winter. Believe me...I know!

\"Howes Lubricator\" Diesel Treat - Canadian Product

Hi, I live in Manitoba and own a diesel 1997 Passat and a motorhome powered by a Cummins diesel. Our temperatures in winter can do down to minus 30 and lower so gelling can be a problem. I have used Howes for the last five years and have never had a gelling problem nor have I ever found water in the fuel. The product is very popular with truckers here, usually a good sign. Just make sure that you follow the recommended "dosages" and you shouldn't have any problems. I usually err on the safe side.
Good luck with your car. I'm sure you'll enjoy having a TDI. Great engine!!

Thanks for the input....I suspected you Canadians should produce a good product for obvious reasons. When you say you err on the safe side, do you mean you add a bit more than recommended or are you a bit conservative with the amount you add?

Howes is a good product. It's what I used when I was a trucker to treat the fuel tank on our companies reefer trailers. It says on the bottle that overuse isn't harmful, so I wouldn't worry too much if you add a bit too much.

I have been using Howes for my last three fills with a third of a bottle used on each fill. If you note on the back of the bottle it says to double or triple dose it the first few times for diesel cars, and even double thereafter.

It hasn't been that cold yet in NH, a few single digits to teens in the morning, but I like to err on the safe side. There is a bit of a mileage boost, but this should be expected when raising the cetane of winter fuel.

The product is somewhat expensive at around $7.00/bottle but over the cost of three fills, that's not so bad. I like it and will probably continue to use it until summer fuel comes back.

Where are you finding it for $7.00/bottle? I am paying over $10.00 (with tax) for a half gallon bottle at my local BP station.

Thanks!

I have some of this ( the all in one with the cetane booster in it ). Car seems to like it. I'll save some of it to test when the weather gets really cold. Normally I use PS in the white bottle. Never had a problem. One thing I have noticed is that any additive with cetane booster helps the starts in the cold. They don't seem to do much for me in the summer months ...

Ken,

I should go down your way. That's what I'm paying for a quart.
