How well do TDI\'s hold speed on the interstate

i also find 48 mpgs at this speed to be somewhat suspect...i get about 50 at 70-75, but who knows. maybe. downhill and with the wind...

The more hills, the more it feels like everybody else is standing still.

Ahhh, this is another gem for Tdi club. It is the quintessentially definitive statement of Tdi virtue! Excellent!

I always get better than 50 mpg cruising 75-80 mph on trips. 2002 gls and never less than 46.5 on a tank no matter where I drove.

My car holds speed great - I go right past everyone else when they stop for gas! Driving from SLC to SF last year I got passed by the same cars 2 or 3 times in one day.

Fifth gear, cruise set at 82 mph (no V1 yet) - SLC to Sacramento without stopping, shifting or even slowing down.

Re: How well do TDI\'s hold speed on the interstate

My first road trip with the 2004 wagon was from Denver to Salt Lake and back along I-80 (after heading up to Wyoming) We kept the cruise set to 85mph (or a bit more) for most of the trip, weather permitting. The car had absolutely no problems pulling up any of the hills in 5th; there was always more left in the tank, too. With a car full of kids and gear we averaged in the high 30's for milage.

I love driving up I-70 into the mountains or 36 up to Estes Park. As Eck so clearly put it "The more hills, the more it feels like everybody else is standing still."

Re: How well do TDI\'s hold speed on the interstate

I averaged 80mph from Salt Lake City, Utah to Hayward, CA. (mountains and all). On my way back from CA to UT is a different story due to the snow screen problem. That problem is now solved (Thanks to KERMA on this forum).

The MPGs are great! You should also look at this forum (more specific the people on this forum). Anything you can possible think of on TDI is somewhere on this great forum (if not, just ask). This forum is part of the reason I am driving a TDI today. I don't think resource like this (TDIClub forum) is available for other cars.

I cannot think of any interstate grades that could knock the TDI off of cruise.

In fact, I would like to see an interstate grade that the TDI couldnt accelerate going up.

Re: How well do TDI\'s hold speed on the interstate

I live in Denver, CO and spent a year away at college up in the mountains. I was about ready to trade in my TDI because on the passes if anyone cut me off, I wasnt going to gain any speed any time soon. Shorty after going home for the summer, I lost all hp even on little hills and after being jerked around by my local VW dealer, I finally found out it was the MAF... it was horrible. I toped out going like 35mph on even a little hill... but anyway, since I have taken it back up into the mountains and quickly realized that my MAF had been screwing things up for a while. I can hit even some of the biggest hills and punch it and cruise at around 90mph... cant do that too much on mountain driving... anyone whos taken I-70 through the Colorado mountains can tell you why!!! I dont know if I will ever be able to drive anything else but a TDI... my next one will w/o a doubt be a stick though!

NYS Thruway - Suffern to Newburgh, I cruise that puppy like a dragstrip when the traffic isn't too bad - but it does get an extreme # of 'Sunday Drivers' It's not a matter of getting up to speed - it's being able to hold it because people insist on doing 40 in the passing lane
... My '02 Auto Golf Gls (stock) doesn't like to run under 80

I do 95% of my driving on cruise with several steep up grades and no problem. The only problem I have is all the other drivers who don't use cruise that I have to pass on the hills.

I've done 110 on a highway in florida with nobody around and I still had a little room left. My 2004 is stock. I think it holds up fine

No problem at all. They were just slowing down or had a bad MAF. A TDI will hold speed and get awsome mileage doing it. Injectors and chip will make it really fun as well. Get the TDI and enjoy the mileage. These cars are fun. I drive all kinds of fast cars, but my love is in my TDI. I can hit third gear and spin the tires. Simple a dream to drive.
Ditto, it's truly sweet to never have to downshift on the highway.
