...and here I thought I was the only one stripping the interior of my TDI on the 4th...course I just swapped in sport seats which took 20min, so its not really a comparison...

I threw my back out while getting up from the table after lunch on the 4th~! I had guests up from Florida, and I had to make them go see the fireworks in Boston without me...

NEVER take your back for granted. It's miserable when it doesn't work right.

This thread is verrry INteresting.

(P.S. That hamster site was kewl)

While you were talking to mrchill on the phone, my 05 PD JWagen was being delivered to mrchill....on a flatbed. :(

(cell phone pic)

I was haulin' arse on I-84 on Friday afternoon in Waterbury CT when my 05 PD JWagen died. At first I thought it dropped into limp mode when I accelerated to pass another car...I cycled the key to reset...still had no power and I'm hearing the sounds of metal to metal valve clatter...the sound of pistons crashing into open valves.... OH CRAP!!   I had a sinking feeling in my gut that the timing belt just failed. :( I stepped on the clutch pedal....engine stopped turning completely...it wouldn't stay running on its own...dead for real. Luckily I still had enough speed on the highway to not be a hazard to other drivers and was able to coast over to the right lane and take the nearest exit. Fortunately it's normally not a busy exit and had a long downhill ramp and I was able get off the highway safely.

I popped the TB cover off and had a look and was expecting to see major carnage. The belt wasn't broken from what little I could see and it felt like it still had tension on it. I think the belt or something slipped and caused the engine to jump time and kiss a few valves. :( I know I definitely heard the sounds of valve clatter when it died. The sound wasn't good. The belt might have lost a few teeth somewhere but I couldn't see down far enough. I declared it "dead" at this point and called 911 and the local cops came and called a local towtruck for me. Given that a local VW dealer is the last place I want it towed to, fearing they will totally FUBAR it at my expense, I opted for a long distance tow (140 miles...expensive!) to mrchill's shop. This was my only option to get it to the right person (mrchill) to work on it and get it there without any hassles.

I had a friend drive down from Manchester NH and gave me a ride back to Nashua NH. It was a good opportunity for him to give his gasser a good run on the highway. I rewarded him with a steak dinner and a full tank of gas. On Saturday, I ended up driving my 02 Golf TDI down to Virginia to visit my Mom a day later than originally planned. I was determined to not let this event wreck my vacation. I got back home last night (Tuesday 7/7). The 02 Golf will be turning 330k miles tonight on my way home from work (currently at 329954 miles).

No word yet on the 05 PD JWagen and I'm expecting the worst. :(
BUMP!

The word was the TB definitely failed and trashed the engine. The belt lost teeth along a portion of the belt, enough to cause it to slip and jump time and take out the engine.

The good news is that the BEW to ATD engine swap and performance upgrades have begun! Basically we're dropping a brand new PD engine into my 05 PD JWagen and doing all upgrades we can easily do while everything is apart. The new engine is an ATD PD engine, aka PD100 in Europe, what the BEW PD engine was derived from for the USA. Factory new BEWs completely assembled have become next to impossible to find. Complete factory new ATD PD engines as crate motors are already in the USA and ready to ship and is why we decided to go for the ATD PD engine.

More pics to come and will be posted in the "ATD vs. BEW engine differences?" thread as the work progresses.

How many of us know the exact minute our engine was built?! May 17, 2005 at 2:57. That's cool!
December 15, 2009, 7:30 PM, the 05 ATD PD JWagen is officially back on the road!

Just BUMPing this thread to the top on eve of the July 4th 2010 weekend.

Tomorrow (Saturday July 3, 2010) marks the 1 year anniversary of my 05 PD JWagen suffering a timing belt failure  in Waterbury CT on my way down to VA from NH. :(

The 05 ATD (PD100) JWagen has been running great.

I'm still really impressed by Peter and Julie tackling the heater core. That looks like a real pain in the ass.
My July 4th 2010 was rather uneventful...went exactly as planned for the most part.

The fun part was...more like NOT FUN part on Monday (July 5, 2010) was I did some ham radio antenna install work on the 05 ATD PD JWagen. I installed a roof mount for a 2m/70cm dual band antenna and a glass mount 25-1300MHz mobile scanner antenna.

For the roof mount, I had to CAREFULLY pull the headliner down to get access to the underside of the roof. After selecting the location centered on the Wagen's roof and far enough back from the moonroof assembly, I had to drill a 3/8" hole for the antenna mount. This is one job where you absolutely have to do it right the first time. The headliner was kept pulled down far enough so the drill wouldn't hit the headliner. The roof area above the headliner has a sheet of 3/8" thick foam core insulation glued to the roof that I had to chip away at around the hole to install the mount. I had to make a trip to (The) Home Depot to get some foam weatherstripping tape to wrap around the coax cable so it doesn't rattle against the headliner after everything is buttoned back together.

The scanner antenna install OTOH was a piece 'o cake. It is a glass mount type and is stuck on in the top corner of one of the rear side windows.

Buttoning everything back together afterwards was just as much of a PITA as taking it apart.

Working on the car yesterday was a royal PITA. Temps hit 99F in Nashua and the RH was up there too. I started early in the morning before the weather got hot and had to quit during mid-morning. I couldn't finish it until late in the evening. An antenna install that normally takes a couple of hours ended taking up all day. It was still 82F out and humid at midnight.
