Hi,

My car ran out of Diesel yesterday, I think air is in the fuel system now since I was pushing the gas pedal to the max until I pulled in the gas station, so.. I filled it up with diesel, and now the car does not start up, but it's cranking...

My question is...wondering if anyone could help me or teach me how to fill up the fuel filter? so... that way I could try bleeding the fuel through the tubes and the cylinder lines.

Got a Pela oil extractor? (Used for oil changes by sucking oil out of the dip stick tube). Simply duct tape the suction line of the extractor to the fuel out barb on the filter (installed in the car with the fuel in line attached) and suction fuel through the filter. Works great.

I do this whenever I change the fuel filter to prime it.

Or a MityVac will do the same thing.

You don't say what year car you have so I am guessing 2003 or earlier.

I am putting a PD lift pump in my 2002 and the next time I run out of fuel I will just have to cycle the key to fill up the system.

To prime a new filter I use a funnel to slowly pour in some diesel (or DieselKleen) through the thermostatic T port, tapping it a few times periodically to help displace the air. Then I use a mityvac on the port leading from the filter to the pump to slowly suck the air out.

The one time I ran out of fuel, I only used the mityvac, but still had to crack the injector lines one at a time and crank to purge the air.

Could possibly be the fuel filter is clogged up and that is why it was a narrow escape to the PUMP. Can you see air in the line? Fuel filters should be changed at 20k miles.

get out a 17mm wrench and crack the #3 fuel line open and place a rag around the nut you just cracked. crank until the rag is wet with fuel and tighten the nut back down.

of course, if you have a bad fuel filter, thats another story altogether.

1) take "mickey mouse" clip off the thermostatic tee
2) pull up, and leave the fuel lines connected (3 & 4 in the pic)
3) get a funnel with a small enough tip to fit into the opening
4) pour diesel and/or your favorite additive into filter

or, just do it the MityVac way:cool:

BTW - don't pour any poor diesel in there!:D:p

Pull on the micky mouse clip....to free the assembly,
3 & 4 should move UP with th thermostatic Tee all together
