Hi !!

I tried searching the forums - but couldn't find anything ...

So how it's supposed to check the 5 gear manual transmission oil level ?
(Where is the plug located ? Somewhere in side ?)
- The maintenance shedule does list this ...

The tranny is A04 -type ...

Pictures could help

The fill plug is on the front side of the transmission case. You can't miss it. You need a 17 mm allen socket to remove the fill plug.
Remove the plug, stick your finge in and see if it comes out oily.

Hint: the oil fill level is supposed to be right up to the level of the fill plug.

p.s. The drain plug is on the underside of the transmission case near the differential. (Or the right side drive shaft)

one note:

car needs to be level to get an accurate reading on the amount of oil in there.

Is there a recommended time to replace this oil? Someone told me never and that it is already synthetic that comes from the factory. I would suspect 80/90 gesr oil am i correct?THx John

about right johnathan

some folks have had the best luck replacing hte factory stuff with Redline MTL.

Others have been using the series 2000 75W-90 oil.

and for my money - change it at about 50,000 ODO and then every 100 or so 1000 miles.

Thank you all for the help !!

It seems impossible to access from topside

(And from underneath the plastics etc. must be removed - I'm not too excited with this ...)

well if you have really long arms and a flexible back and strong fore arms you can get it done from the top - but it is easiest to get at from the bottom and yes that means taking all the plastic stuff off.

in general unless you have over 100k miles since the last top off or check then you probably are okay.

Our Volvo 240 with the M46 w/ OD tranny went about 210,000 miles before being checked (well drained) and about 3/4 of a quart came out - supposed to be 2 quarts in there! (yes I took the OD screen and resevoir off too).

The tranny is supposed to be sealed. nothing in or out while it isn't exactly so - it is pretty close to that. good luck
