Here's a tidbit for anyone else out there the likes to over-engineer their projects and work out all the details:

Dry weight of a 1.9 TDI (AHF) with AC and DMF (but no clutch) according to my digital scale is 361 lbs. See pic for exact configuration.

Awesome! Thanks for posting :) .... Neat little scale, where'd ya pick that up at? I was just checking weights of Toyota truck engines and the dressed alh is about the same as a 22r, A bit lighter than the 3rz and about 50-70 lbs lighter than the 5vzfe :)

I'll weigh the Jeep 2.5L when it comes out in a few weeks. I found some numbers for that motor via google, but it'll be good to get a weight of the motor all dressed.

I keep tabs on what comes out and what goes in, since I'd like to do new springs/shocks eventually.

The scale was $63 off amazon, rated up to 440 lbs reading 0.1 increments. It paid for itself last year when I was ebaying my collection of diesel benz parts. Losing a couple bucks here & there on mis-estimated shipping costs adds up over a hundred parts.

When I last looked into it, I found the 2.5 to be around 400 lbs and the 4.0 weighs a little more than 700

Yeah, that's good info to know as well as where you got the scales!

I have the jeep motor weights:
2.5L 4cyl, AX-5, and a NP231 weigh 540 lbs. The CG of the whole assembly is just about at the back of the engine block.
edit: (AX-5)

Sold a BEW short block to a guy from Charlotte who bought the entire HPA setup .... He sent me some pictures of the conversion .... Adapter plate looked good but the engine "truss" was wacked looking as it spaced the harmonic balancer out several inches so it would line up with the jeep accessories.... Asking for fail IMHO

Carefull about speaking bad on HPA, the last thread where we talked about you selling that guy a short block was black holed. Probably because I said HPA buyers should do research with VW mk5 owners before buying....

Power of the purse .... Honestly after hearing this guys horror stories I feel it's necessary to inform people, he was a capable mechanic and it seems they used him as a beta tester while charging him full on retail....
Btw was that "black holed" thread on here or vortex?

Fixed my typo - the stock trans is the AX-5. And that's a wet weight, since I hadn't drained oil or coolant when I weighed that.

Additionally, I got the weights at each mount location
Front Left: 178 lbs
Front Right: 196 lbs
Transmission: 165 lbs.

No HPA kit for me. I have no knowledge of their engineering, but I wanted something a little different for my rig. I have a 4L65 auto and NP241 that's going in using a custom bellhousing.

Right now, it looks like the driveline I'm putting in is going to weigh about 590lbs dry. Definitely going to be lighter than a 4.0 or SBC, but not going to have weight savings over the 2.5L.

One other benefit - The old drivetrain was 67" from fan to rear yoke, my new drivetrain measures about 57". When it's all placed, I'll have a rear shaft that's about 6" longer than previously.

Any idea what it weighs when you strip it down to just essentials?
Thinking about airplane conversion, and don't need A/C or EGR or anything other than alternator.

The original poster to this thread, Mcneil, hasn't visited here since 2018. So, I doubt you'll be getting an answer from him.

I'll make a wild guess: The AC compressor will weigh about 20 lbs, EGR about 2 lbs, that visible motor mount about 2 lbs,and the DMF (duel mass flywheel) about 50 lbs. The Turbo will need to stay because the TDI engine is a slug without it. Likely there is no coolant inside the engine. He never said if it had any oil in it.......... EDIT: Well, on a second read, it appears it is wet weight! ... but, either way, the difference is quite small.

Hope this helps ...... research the web for the weight of those items.

Dry weight would indicate no oil or coolant (except for whatever is residual in the block). Got me thinking about my swap, looks like I lost about 190lbs with the ALH conversion, the Toyota 2L-TE it replaced is specced at 551lbs. Pretty stout for a 2.4L 4 banger.

Thank you! I had lost this thread, and just happened to find it again.
So can possibly drop around 70ish pounds by stripping off non essentials... Perfect! That gets me to the target weight.
