At the moment...I intend to keep it until it dies. Being a MK VI...I suppose that could be six months from now (HPFP failure) or 10+ years from now, lol.

I agree, there are always unforeseen things that come up in life. Or catastrophic mechanical failure that affects these things.
But I'm shooting for the 10 year mark as my goal.

it all depends on trouble free operation. if i have issues its done . if i don't ill delete the crap and have it tuned. maybe rims and few other things- then ill keep it for long time.

Why such an modest goal? Our mk3 Jetta TDI is still going after 16 years! :D

I keep my cars for as long as I can. I drove my Honda for 13+ years, until it had nearly 250k miles on it. Of course, reliability is a factor as well. Once a car is paid off, I want to drive it without that monthly payment for as long as possible. But if it starts costing me more in repairs/upkeep than a monthly payment would be, it's time to let go. My Honda didn't cost me much in that regard, but at 20 years old, it had finally reached the point where I worried about what was going to go wrong when I drove it long distances. At that point, I'm willing to take on a monthly payment for a few years again.

I hope to drive the TDI for as long or longer, particularly as it's a diesel, and those are supposed to be "just warming up" at 200k miles. Unless TDI's are a completely different animal from the diesels I am thinking of, which they might be.

I'm never selling this one, it's rare, fun to drive, great for car shows, it's part of the family now...:)

Well the new car smell hasn't worn off yet and it's still new enough that I don't dread making the payments yet... So it might be a bit early in the game for me to respond to this thread haha.

Ha ha! Right? I am also still in this "honeymoon" period. I tell people "I love it so much I don't even mind the payment." Much, anyway. :)

My previous car was so poorly equipped that the increase in amenities still amazes me (my last car didn't even have a center armrest lol). In order to get the same creature comfort gain the next time around I think I'd have to buy an Aston Martin... And possibly for that reason alone I think I'll be driving the TDI for awhile haha.

Exactly. I had a center arm rest, but not much else. It was a bare bones Honda with no amenities at all. That got old the older I became, lol. Maybe that's the answer to true car bliss. Just deny yourself any creature comforts or extras at all for years, and then when you do get a new car, everything is amazing!

Plan on keeping both TDI Jetta's until they get to 200,000 miles. Then get a couple of new ones again :)

Once my kids start driving on their own, I'll no longer need the backseat for hauling them around (as much). At that point, I'll probably trade the Jetta in and go back to a Golf. GTD would be a pretty nice jump if we actually get it here.

Looking for another one with the same color candy apple white with a DSG with 40k on and full bumper kit. I just saw it today they want 20k for it.

I got mine for $17500 with 34,000 miles on it, 6 speed, leaves room for mods at that price, which I did...:cool:

Plan on keeping it for a long time. Got a nice commute now 114 miles a day 4x a week + whatever I drive on my 3 day weekends. My commute might get a lot shorter if I get the job in my hometown where the commute is 14 miles round trip. So will probably have the car for a long time since it only has 30,xxx on it now.

I'd keep it for 10+, but I'll be around 350K miles by then if I keep driving this much. Rather than by years, I'll be going by mileage and wear and tear, and I'd say I'll probably want to try whatever the new technology is once I put around 200-250k on this one, which puts me in the 5-8 year category.

Til the wheels fall off or the repair cost make it uneconomical.
I have the 2 Micron Tech kit and do most of the work myself.
It is a great car to drive, but a PITA with the things that need attention.
I usually keep cars for at least 10 years
1959 Willys station wagon ?? Restoration of 1st car ever driven
1990 Surburban 125k - Occasional hauling Chevy problems
2002 Prius 170K - Absolutely trouble free
2009 JSW 185K - PITA with maintenance and things that should have been bulletproof by now.

As long as I kept my 1999 Honda CR-V...15 years...provided it is as reliable as the Honda was.

Otherwise, I am gone if it is causing me issues. The Ford did and I haven't owned one since 1983 and probably never will.

After only 1 year I'm thinking about a GLI. But, I haven't driven one and I may not like the power of the engine. I don't really drive enough miles to worry about the fuel economy - even if 40-50 mpg does make me feel good.

This poll has had better responces then I had originally anticipated! And I find the statistics interesting.
Looks like a lot of people baught these cars for the long run!

I know their are issues with these cars, but I think the vast majority of mk6 Tdi's are still problem free.

Only time will tell, but here's to hopeing for long term reliability and many years of ownership! :)

8-10 years should put me in the 250-300k range so it'll be due for replacement. The higher end years will depend on what starts wearing out and how expensive those little things add up to over the years.

Depending on the up keep costs, I will probably keep the 10 JSW another 4-5 years and then give it to one of the kids and get a new diesel. I don't foresee my wife ever giving up her Golf, unless she decides to go for the Golf-e.
