How do you replace the Thermostat in a 1996 B4 1.9 Passat TDI engine?

I'm going to replace my water pump as there is leaking out of the weep-hole. At the same time I should replace the T-stat as well as it does not fully close anymore.
Cooling system is clean and has never had tap water in the system.
Are / is there a video on how to replace the T-stat on this engine?

I think this is what you want. When replacing the Thermostat, I use a shop vac to create a vacuum at the burp bottle and this will hold the thermostat in place while you install the o-ring and themostat housing. Almost impossible to get the thermostat to stay in the proper position otherwise because it sits in a machined relief.

Thin lare of petroleum jelly on a dry serface will hold it in place before placing the Housing on.

I posted the wrong pump photos.
I may remove the timing belt as well. The crank shaft balancer is squealing when it is cold out. I do not have the pulleys locking tools.
Never done the belt by myself, had the mechanic do it and now they want a couple of grand to do the job.

You can remove the water pump -housing thermostat as a unit.
With out touching the Timing belt.
Squealing balancer is a know sign of a bad balancer.
Requires Replacing The Crank bolt and Balancer.
Both dont affect the timing belt.

Yes Requires Replacing the Cramk Bolt if signs of it coming loose.
Inspection is done anytime the Blancncer shows signs of Failing lets not cut corners.
That cause engine failure!!!

Since when does failing rubber on the balancer indicate a worn crank pulley/snout? If the pulley/snout are worn, then they will take the wear & tear instead of the the balancer. He only needs to inspect the snout if he already has signs of failure (hard start, timing bounces around).

Thank you for your concerns about my reading skills, but you said "the Crank Bolt" ("the" indicating there is only one), and now you're talking about "the Balancer Bolt", of which there are four.

There are no ‘signs’ of it coming loose, it’s impossible to tell until you remove it.

You need to post more clearly because you specifically mentioned the crank bolt and then changed the next post to Balancer Bolt.
It is you who needs to post more clearly, not for others to try and figure out what you meant.
