How can you tell???

OK - this is coming from a GOLF owner....

How can you tell that a New Beetle is a TDI?? I cant see any indication from the back. The Golf has two insignia on the rear hatch. One says Golf, and one says TDI, so it's really easy.

From another Golf TDI owner: I have not seen any exterior indication to show that a New Beetle is a TDI. The only clues I have used are to look in the air-intake opening on the passenger side to see if there is an intercooler. If there is, then look at the rear window to make sure that it does not have the retractable spoiler (1.8T). If not, then it is a TDI. Also, only the TDIs have tachometers that red-line at 4700 RPM. This is tough to see on a New Beetle, because the tachometer is so small.
Sorry. If there are simpler, more obvious clues, I would like to find out what they are as well.

Only other way is to check the exhaust for soot...

You can always lift the fuel filler flap to see if it says DIESEL.

1. Follow it for 700 miles. If there are no fuel stops, it's a TDI.

2. Roll down your window, turn down your CD player, and listen.

3.(In addition to Gary's comment) Rub your hand across any part of the back. Soot seems to cling on.

4.Ask the owner, we love to talk about it.

The only way to tell if a parked NB is a TDi is to look at the tach. Redline 4,700 it's a scoot spewer.

Of course, if the windows are tinted.... You can't see the tach.... Then you have to use the other secondary methods...

I've thought about getting a TDI emblem, but at some level I like the subtlety of driving off when it's cold. ;->

Actually, once it's warmed up, the muted sounds are just different enough that some people comment that it sounds like the 'old' one. It's ALWAYS fun to tell them that it's a turbodiesel. Sometimes you have to pop the hood to prove it.

Then again, it's a Golf, so it's easy to see anyway.

You're right. If I had it to do over again I think I would just put on one of those TDI badges. Maybe I will come renewal time.

I heard NYS is coming out with new vanity plate styles. Did you hear anything about this?
