How about this deal?

Research is concluded and I am in the market for a 2001 Jetta TDI GLS. Was recently quoted $19,995 for an '01 Baltic Green with beige cloth and luxury pckge. (15" alloys, sunroof). Don't know if I want that color, and would really like monsoon and heated seats as well. What do you think of that price?

Cheers

I don't know. What's the sticker price? The markup is about $1500 or so, I'd guess. There are internet resources available to get invoice and MSRP on both the car and the "factory" options.

VWs are in high demand, and supply is tight. You won't get the thing for a steal, but you should be able to get $500 to $1000 off the sticker price. Do NOT pay sticker for a Jetta!

I also wouldn't worry too much about the purchase price. You can spend months wheeling and dealing to knock a couple hundred more bucks off, but if you plan to keep the car "forever" like most TDI buyers do then the amount you save off MSRP becomes negligable in the greater scheme of things. Ten years from now you won't care about $200 more or less. Don't just march in and pay sticker, but don't waste a lot of time and effort, either. Personally, I'd consider $750 below the sticker price to be a reasonable deal for a new TDI. Not a great price, but good enough to sleep at night and never look back.

Good point! The end of the model year is the best time to shop if you intend to purchase. For a lease you want the very first one off the truck at the BEGINNING of the model year. But leasing a TDI makes no sense in the first place.

Seems a little high. I paid $20850 for mine about 4 wks ago(Jetta GLS, Lux pkg, Leather pkg, side curtain airbags, no Monsoon). I ordered a Baltic Green TDI, but the local dealer couldn't tell me when I would get my car even after waiting 5wks. My old Jetta's tires were getting pretty bad so I drove 130 miles and bought a blue one. I'm glad I did, I think I like the blue better. TDI's with leather and 5sp demand a premium(especially silver, pearl green). I did a lot of research and pricing at Edmonds.com. Shop around you'll be amazed a what some dealers will do to sell a car. Good luck.

Jibba- I paid 21k for my 2001 Golf GLS TDI with lux, CWP and Monsoon. This was after talking him down from 23800 or so. I think the MSRP with options was just shy of 20k. Because Golf GLS TDI with lux is about the rarest possible VW and I was bargaining for a car that wasn't even on the lot yet AND it was very clear that there wasn't another similar car available in the entire region, I didn't expect to get a particularly good deal.

If you want Monsoon and heated seats, the dealer should be able to install them for you. I suspect that the heaters are in all seats, they just hook them up for you when you opt for it.

You might do better, but 20k is a decent price given the high demand and low supply. Given your location, there are more dealers to choose from and probably more supply so you might be able to beat them down further. One idea would be to take your deal to another stealership and try to get them to screw the first stealer by giving you a better price.

Regarding online buying services.. I tried to go that route, but all I came up with was "no cars available" or the service just sent an email to the dealers I was already talking to.

If you are working off of MSRP/sticker, you are working backwards and playing the dealers' game. You are always better off working from invoice minus any rebates. From that number, add in an appropriate amount of profit for that car in your area. I got my Golf for $400 over invoice in December. For more info, go to www.edmunds.com.

(Yeah, I know, there are no rebates on TDIs. Someday someone may buy a car that does have a rebate.)

As a point of reference, I just picked up my new 2001 Golf GL TDI last weekend. Sticker was $16.8K but paid only $16,101. That included destination charges and everything but TT&L. VW dealerships *are* dealing right now, but they told me that won't last much longer because as gas goes up, so does the demand on the TDIs.

Thanks for the feedback--that car sold the day after I was given that offer--there aren't many TDIs at area dealers and obviously folks are getting smart. The search continues.....
