Hi, I recently bought a 2010 Jetta Sportwagen TDI. I was wondering if anyone knew if it could qualify as low emission vehicle and I could get a sticker to use the HOV lane in California. From what I read it meets the ULEV requirement but doesnt meet the federal ILEV requirement. Is this correct?

Just another plug AGAINST diesels. I know of no locality that consideres diesels of any kind as low emissions to qualify for car pool lanes.

I also think the general trend is to no longer allow "hybrids" with single occupants to use car pool lanes. In Northern Virginia diesels never qualified for this exemption and hybrids are being (or have been) phased out as being special. Reason being is that the general public is outraged by hybrids with a sole person being allowed to use the car pool lanes. These special lanes are designed TO REDUCE the number of cars on the roads and traffic conjestion and the regulators are finally figuring this out. Allowing single-rider hybrids does not accomplish this.

While I agree, maybe it is time to change that. After all is it not more important to have clean air, than to have a faster commute.

Faster commutes will only encourage people to chose homes further away from their work (or work further from their homes) thereby increasing overall consumption of fuel and pollution.

They need to allow only non-green, pollution spewing cars in HOV lanes. Then they stay on the road less, thereby spewing less pollution. A Prius can sit all day in traffic and be as green as an apple. :D

HA! That's actually pretty damn funny AND true. A Prius will be mostly on battery in stop and go traffic while an Escalade idling away and accelerating then stopping is pretty much worst case scenario if you are measuring grams per mile.

As a congestion-reduction measure, motorcycles are fine there. When they get to their eventual destination, motorcycles don't eat up as much parking space (provided that the municipality is sensible and allows multiple bikes in one spot!) and that alone reduces congestion from people looking for parking spots.
