did you try having someone wiggle the hood while you hold the release?
That was interesting and potentially useful but it does not remove the grill behind the emblem. My extension tube is too large to fit through the gaps in the grill behind the emblem.

I might try getting a spray with a thin tube though and shoot it through the grill behind the emblem.

It's been so damn cold though (and I do not live that far north) I am a little reluctant to be tweaking that plastic at the moment. Maybe if it warms up a tad.

Surely someone sells an Audi emblem that fits that VW spot right? LOL

p.s. Thanks for all the great suggestions guys, I will keep trying. This should not be such a PITA

Actually I am due a service (110k) but I'd frankly like to resolve this myself before I bring it in.

As it is I have a cracked CV boot that needs to be replaced so I am trying to hold the bill down some. Not to mention VW dealer service seems to often break **** they go to fix. LOL

Then they would charge me for a cable they broke and a latch.

I'm PRETTY SURE it falls outside the VW emissions warranty :)

Then again if you can't get the hood open to get to an emissions warranty item I suppose it might be covered LOL. But no CEL's at the moment.

So.....I GOT THE HOOD TO FINALLY OPEN!

I went up to town to run some errands and when I came back thought, "well whatever spray made it's way into the latch has had a day or two to soak, might as well give it a try"

My expectations were rather low for it to work.

Then pop it opens!

Looking at the latch area most of my spray missed it but I guess between the little bit that did and it being slightly warmer (it was 35 out today) the thing finally opened.

What was interesting as the secondary latch, it was actually quite stiff after I popped the primary latch. Moving that lever back and forth it was not as free as it usually is. So I shot some WD-40 into that and that helped a lot.

The actual latch does not look corroded much but I guess the plates in the mechanism were enough to cause a problem.

So, WD-40 is a far better solvent than a lubricant. Now in the olden days you used white lithium grease on hood latches and such.

So recommendations on what I should apply to the latch to make sure it stays working now that I got it open?

Thanks for hanging in there with me, advice and counsel has been much appreciated.

I use a dry silicone lube with Teflon.
