Figure I'd post this since I was replacing the hood. My OEM paint job was pretty sub par. It was really showing it's age. I tried to bring it back with compounds, polishes, etc, but it wasn't having it (I've brought other paint back to life so not a complete novice to the process) :
I had issues with my OEM lines leaking, so I decided to rip them out and replace them with vacuum/ washer tubing and get rid of those hard corrugated plastic pieces that just tend to fail. Note, this was only for the hood, doesn't have to do with the lines coming from the pump.
This is all you literally need for this mod. 5/32 (4mm) vac tubing, probably get 6 feet of it. Picked this up at O'Reilly.
First thing is to remove your nozzles from the hood. Push (or pull) the nozzle's towards the BACK of the car, then pull the backside of the nozzle downwards. They will come out. They're almost spring loaded (kind of like the bumper lights).
Once they are removed from the OEM hoses, you can unplug the rubber grommet from the hood and carefully fish the entire line out of the hood.
Here's what you're going to get out of the hood:
Cut your new line to length of the old lines.
**Replace the Hood** (4 bolts, some messing around for adjustment, yadda yadda)
There's a y-splitter you'll see. You want to remove the hard tubing from the y and install your new tubing onto the Y. I used some self healing tape after I installed to tubing just to keep it in place. But it isn't going anywhere:
Here's what it will look like installed on the Y before you fish it through the hood. If anything, cut your pieces a bit long, you can trim them before you install the nozzles.
I used a wire to fish the rubber hose through the hood:
Driver side hose installed on nozzle (passenger side will look similar):
New Tesa tape on the hard line:
Oh and the GTI hood that I picked up. Paint is SO much better than the old hood. Probably will keep the old hood to practice my painting skills.
One thing I'd like to ask. In this whole mess, removing and installing my hood/bonnet installation, the stuff was trashed. I had to throw it away as it was unravelling. What have you all done, those that have had your hood installation fail? Find more hood insulation? Wrap install deadening tape? The paint under the hood is nice, wouldn't want it to start to go bad because of the heat of the engine. Wondering if it's necessary to replace that insulation with something else?
