Honda says it will market cleaner-burning, diesel-powered cars in North America by 2009

Honda patented a new diesel engine system that it claims curbs smog-forming gases.

In Honda's treatment system, exhaust flows through a plasma reactor, or gaseous layer of atoms with highly polarized electrical charges, according to the United States patent.

That separates harmful nitrogen oxides in the fumes from oxygen and forms nitrogen dioxide that's then reduced or absorbed by alkali metals and silver.

No automaker has yet built a diesel-powered automobile that can meet stringent pollution rules in California, but DaimlerChrysler and Volkswagen, the largest sellers of diesel vehicles, are also working on different clean-diesel systems.

Honda aims to sell a diesel model in North America by 2009, five years after introducing one in Europe.

I throught it was 2008 with a similar 2.2 diesel engine they have in Europe but more ponies for the USA market and able to meet 2007 diesel standards in al 50 states.

Great news! We need more diesel options in the US, rather than less. Honda was daring enough to introduce their very first diesel engine in Europe, and they succeeded from what I've read.

As we've posted here years ago, the minute Honda or Toyota figure overcome the EPA diesel blockade, figure out the marketing and introduce small diesels to the US, that's when public opinion of diesels will begin to turn.

Unfortunately the likelyhood that we will see small efficient diesels from Toyota is a bit slim.......MAJOR competition for their own product.....Prius and other Hybrids (Camry....)

More likely that we will see a ginourmous diesel pig in the Tundra that can tow a house and gets 15MPG before anything else.

When fuel prices get over $5.00 you`ll see a diesel in every model. We really don`t have any better options.
