Honda patented a new diesel engine system that it claims curbs smog-forming gases.
In Honda's treatment system, exhaust flows through a plasma reactor, or gaseous layer of atoms with highly polarized electrical charges, according to the United States patent.
That separates harmful nitrogen oxides in the fumes from oxygen and forms nitrogen dioxide that's then reduced or absorbed by alkali metals and silver.
No automaker has yet built a diesel-powered automobile that can meet stringent pollution rules in California, but DaimlerChrysler and Volkswagen, the largest sellers of diesel vehicles, are also working on different clean-diesel systems.
Honda aims to sell a diesel model in North America by 2009, five years after introducing one in Europe.
