Hi guys.
I got a 1z 90hp from a 1996 passat That im gonna transplant it to my volvo 745 station vagon, and my turbo have seen greater days, its time to change it, so better just to do a upgrade.

What turbos are there that would work great for my 1z, making good power and still be good fuel mileage on the freeway and dont make a big hole in my wallet ?

Got a great deal on a Audi A6 1999 2.5 v6 TDI turbo (GT2052V)
https://www.bildelsbasen.se/img/370...404(1).jpg/audi_a6,_s6_2002_turboaggregat.jpg
but its a VNT turbo ? what needs to be done to make that one work on my tdi ?

Or is there a greater way to go ?

My other mods are just every mod and a big 3" 650mm alu intercooler and 3" strait pipe from the turbo, EGR block.

The car is just my daily and want more power and try to keep it at a good MPG when im not hammering the pedal to the floor :D .

Yes vnt turbo gt2052v =vnt
1z = gt15 wastegate
You need n75 from afn and ecu afn 110 hp
1z injectors are small good for 130 hp same for turbo.

if you stay at wastegate turbo find holset he221w and big nozzels like race520 and 11mm pump 2bar boost 230a240 hp

Since the engine is going into a non-VAG, it might end up being simpler to keep a wastegate turbo. On the other hand, if you don't have an ECU and wiring harness yet, then if you buy an AFN 110 HP ECU, wiring harness and N75, it will be easy to use the GT2052V.

130 HP is not realistic even with very long injection durations. It maybe possible with an ALH - or optimistic dynos  - but 1Z tends to hit limits at lower power.

I would want 240 hp :D but this engine is 590k km and yeah not a good idea, im looking fpr maybe 150hp, would love to beat my friends volvo 940 turbo 190 ish hp.

You guys dont know of any wg turbos that are good for 160 ish hp and dont have huge spoole up time ?

I got 2, one of my engine and one from another 1z but from polen so there are no antithieft ****, you can just put power to the pump and go just like a old mechanical pump, and thats the one im gonna use.

I have seen a guy here in sweden who dyno his golf mk3 1z with a heavy evrymod, smoked like a train and pulled out 130hp and 320nm but i dont want roaling coal, after one week and i well get pulled over for it haha.

I want it to be smokeless without every mod so if i get a cop on me i can just flip the switch and the car dont smoke that bad, but ofc i want some smoke :D

But to get a smokeless tdi it reallt needs bigger injectors and a tune,

What injectors and turbo will be fine for 150-160 ish hp ?
Dont know how long my clutch will hold, its a audi a6 flywheel and preasureplate and a volvo 740 m47 disk.

Gt2052s from saab and pp764 .230 nozzel with chip
Where do you get the chips ?
Here in sweden the big companys refer you to the diesel boces they sell but for this old diesel its basicly a evrymod in a box for 300 dollars so no tnx.
Tnx for the tip on the turbo :) there are alot of saabs here in sweden xd

holset he211 or he221 with a generic t25 8v vw manifold.

I dont think you can get a more budget friendly and excellent turbo for this particular type of application.

Sounds good :)

Any one know how the volvo v70 D5252T turbo is on a 1.9 tdi ?
There are stupid cheap here, 90-120 euro on the scrapyards.

iirc that turbo has wg ,why not use a vnt turbo with push type actuator,it will spool much better then a wg one

Veins complicate things and can clog, but of course they give better response. Mark has K03/K04s on both his AHU eurovan and ASV swapped mk3 golf. Great response, not that big of an increase over the stock turbo though. 2052 seems to be the go to, still might put one on the golf since it has a cam and 11mm pump, but the car is almost purely used in the city so low rpm response is critical.

5252T was originally a K14 right? That's too small to bother with, stock replacement would be about the same. K24/T3 from a 1.6TD VW would be an upgrade from that and is still small and old tech. We didn't get many cool diesels over in North America, but you can be sure they're well supported and all have a strong fan base.

Yes the 5252t has a K14 here in sweden.
My 1z was a automatic car, does it have a 10 or 11mm pump ? Was reading sometime ago and remember that automatic cars should haves 11mm pump ? Sounds weird to me.

vnt with vacuum actuator is better then vnt with push type actuator and both are better then wg with push type actuator.131pd pd turbo from longitudinal engines bolts into your oem manifold, also a4 2.0 170ppd turbo.

Sweet, i can get a gt2052v from audi v6 tdi for a 30 dollars and almost no shaft play, so i think im gonna try to convert it to a push actuator, does the length of the movement on the actuator mather ? Or will the actuator break the vnt when it get to max?

That's on the ALHs, to my knowledge we didn't get automatic 1Z/AHUs in North America thankfully. Automatics started in 2000 and pre 2004 models are known to be weak. Probably didn't make a pump change on the earlier 1z/ahu models given the low production numbers and lack of emissions, no idea though.

Are you using the M47 trans.? If so, you'll probably want to keep the torque below 250 ft-lb if you want the M47 to hold together. Fortunately, the M46 and M47 transmissions are probably quite plentiful over there. The M46 can take a bit more abuse.

Yeah i know, i have both m47 and m46 but i dont like overdrive, i will use the m47 until it dies and throw on the m46.

M46 and m47 are like candy here you can buy them for 20-50 dollars

I have a m90 aswell but dont know if the shaft will go into the disk enouth so maybe at a later date i try the m90 if i blow my m46

Like Owain said, the ALH's got different pumps on the auto cars but I dunno about euro market.

however, if you look at the bosch pump number, you can find out right away. it will say 460 414 ### for an 11mm pump and 460 404 ### for a 10mm pump.

the middle number is the plunger size:
494 is 9mm pump
404 is 10mm
414 is 11mm
424 is 12mm
and so on...

That turbo is really big for your engine without some mods(like much bigger nozzles, fmic, etc) it will be laggy....
First of all to install that specific turbo you need also other turbo to manifold flange t25 is called? iirc or use an golf2 1.6d manifold...second you need to drill a hole in the turbo's intake housing and connect the actuator's hose there. You could adapt the actuator that you have right now on your original turbo. How to adjust the actuator?Iirc 1z haves obd1,so you need an obd1 to obd2 adapter and vcds/vag-com .
The downsides of the push type actuator vs vacuum are:
-not so good turbo reply (aka more laggy)
-high boost at high speeds even when driving at constant speed,so more consumption.

Never had any low rpm response issues with my setup...any one who went on a hell ride with me or witnessed my hijinx at fest can attest to that...however a light A2 generation chassis may have helped...but ultimately the correct supporting mods make all the difference in the world...head work, cam, valve springs...and I only ran a 10mm pump :D

the only manifolds i can find to golf mk2 diesel is https://www.bildelsbasen.se/img/370/a/a/ed899a/path/mnt/newftp/89/bil/lgnr/26052(1).jpg/vw_golf_1991_grenr%EF%BF%BDr_avgas.jpg
and
https://www.bildelsbasen.se/img/370...nr/6864(1).jpg/vw_golf_1986_grenrr_avgas.jpg

No t25, but i will just make my own adapter for it so no problems there.

I got the audi turbo for free now, but i will save it to the next summer for 0.235 nozzels, ahn ecu and n75 so i can use the vnt part of the turbo, and a new clutch :D

110hp afn injectors and d525t turbo will do for now, dont know how much my audi clutch will hold so.
The gt2052s or hx27 he221w are really expensive compared to the d5252t turbo thats like barly 90 dollars for one, and im on a budjet so will have to do :) the stock one probebly will hold for the inspection but not more

VW 8V manifolds all use the same bolt pattern to bolt it to the head. This means all the Ebay manifolds you see, priced everywhere from $50-$250, that are meant to strap a turbo onto an 8V 2.0 gas engine will bolt onto the head of 1Z/AHU/AFN/ALH etc etc

i will be using that trapezoid flanged one with a home-built adapter.

I will step in here and suggest you consider installing a GTC1549vz turbo. It makes a huge difference...I am running 162 hp at the front wheels with race 520 nozzles and the turbo upgrade. Response is fantastic. Best part is you can buy this turob for under $400 on eBay.UK. No MPG CHANGED if you contol your right foot.

VNT vanes sticking is such an old, tired argument. Countless cars on the road with multiple hundreds of thousands of kilometers on the original VNT turbo (mine with 330k km) with no complaints. I'd take the response and efficiency of one any day.

What do you do with the eletrical connection on the vnt actuator ?, dont got one when im useing a AFN ecu and n75 on my 1z wire.
