Replace brake switch with the new one and clear the code, they are a known failure item. Get a fan from Brian at Roseland (or where ever else you may choose) and he'll ship it to you, easy to change, only takes about an hour. As for the rollers. If they didn't replace the 2 small ones, get them from Brian (or even VW) and have someone close to you change them out as they will not make it to your next belt change. This is a must.....because I just had to do a timing belt job on my own car as the lower small roller had seized and when doing the job, when I shook the upper small roller it rattled as the needle bearings had no more grease in them. Do it right or start saving your money for when you do the head job and possibly the rods, pistons and so on. Please head the warning, its all up to you. I'm in aviation and there is one great saying that I always keep in mind......"Learn from the mistakes of others as you'll not live long enough to make them all yourself"

Good luck
John

I will heed the warning, I am guessing that replacing these small rollers is going to be about the same size job??

Mistakes are fine, we have all made them.
The job for the two rollers, yeah its almost the same as the entire job because of the lower roller. If it was only the top you could have got away with just pulling off the top cover and doing it.

This is the forum, I am surprised nobody else pointed you in that direction for some help, oh well. There is a thread near the top of good mechanics in Calgary, take a look it is very good.
Anyhow just for a question to everybody else because my memory can't remember. What is the standard dealer protocol in doing a timing belt and replacing parts? What is it the VW says all has to be done in this case?
Why I would honestly ask the dealer why they only did a half job instead of doing the entire thing? At the price he paid its easily enough to say he paid for it to be done twice, but I figured I would throw that out.

Not necessarily. Can be done without removing the timing belt. Connect with Benjamin and find someone in your area to help you out with the job.

I'm not sure exactly what VW says to replace, but I think they say to replace the belt and tensioner.

Why wouldn't they replace the other things? Well, it's a double edged sword there. If they try to convince the average consumer that they need to have the other rollers and water pump done, many consumers just think that the dealer is trying to sell them unneeded parts and labor. This is due to the bad rep that so much of the auto industry has.

The other side is that if they don't do these things that WE know should be done, and something fails, they have a black eye.

Add in that just a basic TB and tensioner change will cost more than what GURU will charge and they have to add in labor for the other rollers and water pump and the price gets way out of hand for the average consumer.

So, for the dealer, it comes down to marketing, really. I H8 marketing, but the dealer needs to be able to properly show the average consumer the benefit of having the entire timing belt SYSTEM changed when it's time.

That's the optimist in me speaking, here's the other side:

If they don't replace the water pump or rollers, when they go bad, they get to do the whole thing over again with possibly a new head thrown in there as well.

I think the dealer was ok, not great but ok. And your right about the bright side. An optimist is always welcome to comment.
If they were ok, they would have all those parts in stock at all times so as that they can install a "complete kit" when they do a timing belt.

For the brake light switch, just buy it at the dealer. Any savings online will be taken by shipping. Less than $10 US.

It's just above your right leg attached to the brake pedal assembly.

Thanx,
a couple days ago I researched the actual problem, which is, after the car is warmed up, and you use the remote to lock the car, all assoc. lights remain lit. I found the answer, i think, but not really clear on what to do. So I am still researching, trying to comprehend.

Do you know how I can test the primary cooling fan, to find where the fault is??

Whoops, maybe I should elaborate, I have an computer version of the bently manual. I've found some info about testing the fan. I was hoping to find out how to test the connection plug to see if there is any power being delivered. As of yet I haven't found that. I was hoping it would be as simple as using a test light??? I have a multi tester, but am not real clear on using it in this situation. So I'm doing my best to find a test in the manual.
Thanx for your help, sorry I wasn't clear on question.

Don't use a test light on a modern car. Learn to use your multimeter.

In the Bently wiring diagrams there are codes about which wires are going to which pins. There should be an explaination of how to read them.

So poking around, I think I've found out, if I turn on my A/C, both fans should come on. Can anyone confirm this is correct?

Sheesh. First you were whining about it being freezing, and now you are playing with the A/C. :D

HERE is a recent thread about it.

I turned on the a/c and used the multitestor on the port for the main fan, on dc 20 it read 8.66 then I turned off the a/c and it read 0. So I think that I've confirmed power to the fan. So the fan must be not working.
(also when the a/c was on the secondary fan ran)

Thanks, that post lead me to the idea of turning on the a/c to see if the fans would run. (or if the secondary fan would run, and power was at the primarys cable)

So I'll order up a new fan. Now while I waiting on that, has anyone tried to disable the marker/signal lights from flashing when the car is locked with the remote. And by disable, I mean turning off the feature with Vag Com??

can anyone help decipher this?? What I'm trying to do is NOT have my signal/marker light flash when I lock or unlock the car.

46 - Central Convenience: -- KWP1281Only on vehicles with power windows. VAG-COM fine. There are numerous options/ features that can be set.
Selective Unlocking:
[Select]
[46 - Cent. Conv.] (35 - Cent. Locking for manual window cars)
[Recode - 07]
Write down the existing coding for future reference.
Enter 5-digit code from below
[Do It!]

Look at the existing Soft. Coding. If you have selective unlocking (press the unlock button on the remote once to open the driver's door, twice to open all the doors) the last digit of your coding should be an even number. To make all doors unlock, add 1 to the coding.
So, if you have a 2-door 2002 GTI that is coded for selective unlocking (00064) add one to make it 00065 so that all doors unlock with one press of the unlock button.
Lock/Unlock Horn/Flash:
[Select]
[46 - Cent. Conv.] (35 - Cent. Locking for manual window cars)
[Adaptation - 10]
Channel (03..08)
Adaptation Value (1 = on, 0 = off)
[Save]

Channel 03 Auto Lock
Channel 04 Auto Unlock
Channel 05 Unlock, horn sounds
Channel 06 Lock, horn sounds
Channel 07 Unlock, turn signals flash
Channel 08 Lock, turn signals flash
