I restored the body on my MK1 Jetta GLi, and want to fit a TDI motor in her. can it be done without the electronics? Can you use a mechanical pump like sugested on this website
can i use my stock dash and gauges? i would like the old skoolness of my car with some new age eco-power

Course you can! Make sure you run mk3 tdi motor though it would be much easyer using your standard engine mounts. Your also gona be using the tdi gbox with it. You mite have some bother with the gauges as your old engine is probably cable driven tach whereas the tdi are electronic signal from the gbox. you mite have to use some mk2 diesel clocks. Also look on vwdiesel.net good info on mechanical setup there.

Good Luck keep us posted on how it gets on.

Looking to be a very nice project starting there. Reminds me of the 1980 Rabbit PU I did many years ago now with a 150hp 2.0L I4.

So, what do you have against electronics? If you use a 1Z / AHU TDI the electronics are quite simple as well as mounting the engine. You will also have more power and more future power available with upgraded software if you use an ECU. Mounting the ECU in the rain tray, N18 / N75 / J325 on the raintray front and then mounting the MAF - that's it for electronics. With the electronics done correctly (as I could do for you) it is about as simple as connecting less than 12 wires to make everything work. There is no need for a Vehicle Speed Sensor, the "Drive By Wire" accelerator pedal is a non-issue, no need for clutch and pedal switches and you can use the stock GLI gauges.... seems like a no brainer for me to use the electronics!

thanks David, i now you have alot of experience with this sort of thing. i will contact you when i get the motor fit. its a 2002 alh w/37,000kms. would i have to install the cluster somewhere in the car? the motor comes with a1 motor mounts, gbox, stage 3 upsolute kit but no chip.12mm pump head and .216 nozzles,Peloquin O2J LSD,ecu, cluster 2 keys (primary and valet) complete interior and engine harness (w/spare engine harness) pedal cluster,Saab IC, transmission w/shifter box and cables, 100mm drive axles

Holy cow what an engine!
Sounds like the perfect TDI engine to stuff in there and the perfect transmission to match too! What gear ratios are in the transmission?

The issues that I can see off the top is fitting of the passenger side engine mount and then the next big issue would be to see if the turbo and manifolds would clear the firewall or not. Too bad you didn’t test fit prior to paint so if you had to make some firewall alterations you would do it without messing the paint up.

To run the IMMO you would have to put the Golf IV instrument cluster somewhere in the vehicle – lots of places to hide it for sure – trunk comes to mind. Usually for Vanagon conversions we store it under the rear seat or under the passenger seat depending on if it is a passenger van or Transporter.

Keep us posted on the project – sounds really cool!

Todd- you bought the engine from buspass on the 'tex, eh? He had pretty well everything you needed! I thought someone would be smart to snatch that up.
By the way, nice quality paint job. Good to see some nice A1's still kicking about.

You'll have to massage the passenger side frame rail to clear the serpentine belt. Other than that, there should be tons of room for the manifolds.
