My wife's honda was consumed in a flood last Friday night and I'd like to replace it with a Passat TDI. I know they are hard to find, but we love our Jetta TDI so much, we'd love to find one in a Passat. Need the bigger space to haul around a baby girl due in July.

Clyde, the Passat TDI is only available in the B4 body (97 and earlier). B5 TDIs were not brought to the US market, despite being listed in the 98 EPA book at 52 mpg. Have you actually sat in the B4? It's prob not much bigger than an A4 Jetta which grew some over the A3. Is yours an A3 or A4? If an A4 Jetta is too small, the only diesel you can get is a MB 300e turbodiesel. Nice car if you can get it otherwise just forget diesel and get a minivan.

Took us 8 months to find our Passat wagon and the wait was worth every minute of it. Got just the one we were looking for on AutoTrader and is sure is a daily task. Stick with it and good luck.

clydecpa:

The B4 Passat is roomier than any Jetta (A3 or A4). If you go look at a new Jetta notice how small the legroom is for the rear passengers. I could not use a Jetta since I have two teen-age children. I also have an '85 Suburban which hauls everyone and everything, but only gets 12 on a good day with the wind at my back. The Passat is the smallest car I could use to replace the Suburban. You just have to make a decision about what you need.

Also, you might email Greg. He sells cars on eBay and has sold about 6 TDI's including 4 Passat's (one is mine). I think gbillman (on this forum) bought two Passats from him. You can see them in the Passat section of the forum. Tell Greg what you are looking for and he will try to help you.

Don't know how far away you are looking but I just saw a 1996 Passat Wagon for 14,999. Don't know miles. This is in Burlington, WA. Phone number 1-877-246-5913.

Well, the search is over, the search for a Passat TDI that is. My wife loves to drive my little Jetta as much as I do, but doesn't want a "wagon" car for her replacement. She test drove and fell in love with the Honda CR-V (she's a little biased after several good years in her accord, which was rock solid before the flood.) So, I went out and found her an impeccable used '99 CR-V--decent mpg, but no TDI.

If only VW or Honda made an SUV with a diesel engine, or if CAT was making diesel engines for passenger car applications, I'd be first in line...oh, well, maybe someday.

Thanks for all the tips everyone, I followed up on many the past two weeks!
