Questions I'm asking:

1. Why am I having all this white smoke all of the sudden
a. Is it just a glow plug/harness or is it something like the head gasket/nozzles, etc.?

2. Did I do the autoscan right?

I appreciate your time and any advice/opinions I can get.

There was a little white smoke on startups but not a big problem. went away for a week. Started up the car to go for a drive and the smoke billowed out non stop as long as i was idling. it didn't go away like normal. started to drive, every increase in the accelerator caused more smoke to come out. CEL came on shortly after. Ran VCDS for the first time :) yay. Autoscan results are as follows:

I really expected a lot more on the autoscan. Am I doing something wrong? Engine off/on key on/off? I had the engine running because i was told that was what i needed to do. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I would think auto scan should have gone through everything.
I don't have VCDS so I can't answer 100% for it. (I use VAD on an old Palm Pilot)

The 00532 - Supply Voltage B+
07-10 - Signal too Low - Intermittent
Could be a bad connection s/a a bad ground.
You need the wiring diagram to get the pins to test for power and ground.
Do you have the Bentley manual?

I was starting to think an aftermarket radio but no codes were found and it looks like valid info.

I would first check for bad grounds from the battery to the body and to the engine.
Test with the car running, lights on AC on
Measure from the negative post of the battery to a ground point in the body, then from the negative post of the battery to body of the alternator.
I would not want to see more then a few tenths of a volt.
The ground wire under the battery tray has been mentioned many times.

I prefer an amperage test on the glow plugs.
They should all be close to the same reading (15 or so amps iIrc)
A resistance test could be used and if the plug is open it would show no continuity.
The harness has been known to have bad connections, I could not get mine to clamp tight.

Should have mentioned with 230K miles the injectors might need checking.
I think I read they need a refresh at 150K and I do get some white smoke when I start at 260K.
I think fix the glow plug issue first, might be easier and relatively inexpensive.
Test first before throwing parts in the car.
It can be expensive playing a guessing game.

Can you provide some history/background on this car?

Does it start up (cold) OK?

I don't think GPs should play much of a role in this as ambient temps are, I"m assuming, above the threshold (41 degrees).

If you don't know when the fuel filter was last changed then I'd consider doing that, along with running Diesel Purge.

Since you have VCDS you should be able to get a better insight into what is really happening. I'd suggest taking a look at injector balance, for starters; and in general I'd look to do some performance logging (Malone Tuning has some good instructions on what/how to do). Would hope that your timing didn't "slip".

Your autoscan looks right. The only engine issue is the glow plug, intermittent, doubt that's giving you those symptoms.
So focus on things not monitored by the ECU, there are plenty. Wore out injectors, bad compression, basic time, loose piping, leaks, etc. (not the easy answer I know)

Thanks. I spoke with growler about it (since it's Knurren) He believes it may be some slightly worn valve guides perhaps and that letting it sit longer will cause larger plumes of smoke.

It starts up fine and runs fine other than the smoke. It actually did stop smoking after I ran it down the road a little further and didn't smoke the rest of the day.

Ambient temperatures are in the mid-upper 90's so I'm well above the 41, lol.

I'm gonna check the plugs because of the one code and replace the harness.

Are valve guides replaceable? repairable? I'll be looking through some other threads and stuff to figure it out, and of course, with any help you all have :)

What's your oil consumption like?

One of my cars has a bit of an appetite for oil yet it exhibits little smoke when starting up (it's a manual trans car with an 11mm IP, so heavier fueling- I'd expect it to smoke the most at a cold start): my wife's car (now approaching 200k miles) probably smokes more and it goes through a qt of oil in about 8k miles.

I'd heard some of the top guns here say that leaky valve guides weren't all that prevalent.

You have to pull the head to replace valve guides. Usually, the valve stems, which ride inside the guides, are worn too so they must be checked for wear with a micrometer.

In essence, if you have worn guides and valve stems, what's usually done is a head refurbishment. If the oil loss through the guides is not much, you can probably live with it for a long time.

Back in the old days with Chevy heads, we used to install valve guide seals which was a quick fix for worn parts. With VW heads, maybe this is not an option. I have not rebuilt a VW head so I can't confirm what can be done, seal wise.
