Good idea to try another setting. I had a Dodge Dakota where all the fan speeds but "HIGH" went out. Turned out to be a resistor that needed replacing.

No auto brand can find a supplier with blower motor resistors that last. At least they are usually cheap. Not sure about VW.

Not sure where you got this from but I have never had or seen a car that had the blower motor go bad. If the VW dealer fed this to me I'd be very mad at them.

Happened to me too several weeks back. 10F outside... got in to drive to work and no blower motor. Got it to dealer who checked it out, ordered a new motor and installed it. The motor needed to be ordered but arrived the next day. It was covered under warranty but it was pretty uncomfortable traveling down the highway with the windows down to avoid fogging.

Are the replacement blower motors an upgrade/revision/different part#? or just the same as what was in it?

It's happened to me.

Both the resistor and the blower motor went out.

Easy fix. But that was on a GMC envoy. Talk about a money pit.

Same problem here, -2F this morning and no blower, difficult ~1hour drive to the dealership, scraping the inside of the windows with a credit card.

Talked to my dealer today about my frozen ignition lock. Said they hadn't seen that but have been dealing with several blower motors frozen up due to condensation. Been crazy cold here. Several days below zero, normal temps are 40s.

Had problems with many other makes with the blower motor (Honda, Nissan, Isuzu) so it's not just vws.. it's pretty common

As for the door locks, that is a vw thing the b6 passats do it too. The reason it happens is because water gets inside the door (normal) and then in the lock assembly (not normal, should be sealed) and then it freezes. Don't try to slam the door when that happens, nothing will get fixed and you'll break the lock for good..

**EDIT** just saw you said ignition lock. Nevermind, never heard of that. The only ignition problems I've seen was from those 16 year old girls in beetles that have 5 pounds hanging off their keys. It kills the ignition lock quickly.

My blower wouldn't work the other morning, and it has been very cold ever since. I hadn't driven it at all when the blower died. It has sat out in the driveway.

Today I drove the car to the dealer and thought I smelled some "burning" smell.

Maybe the blower was frozen, but I have trouble understanding where the condensation comes from.

The dealer is replacing my blower - I pick the car up tomorrow.

I just bought my second resistor today for the blower and I can't believe they are over $80.00. I have gone through two fans so far and the third sounds like it's ready to kick the bucket also.
I think moisture in the fan area just blew the latest one and I can't figure out where water can get into the enclosed housing.

Sorry about the late reply peoples...turns out it started again when my daughter and wife went to take it to the dealer....appearantly they put the blower fan in the passat lying down insted of upright so if any snow or anything gets in there and you turn off your car the snow can melt and freeze the fan..i had a bit of the burning smell too...the dealer said to put the heater to inside circulation only then it puts the flap over the fan before turning the car off...gotta say that was a dumb move on VW's part...oh well cest la vie

Anyone have issues with a fully functional but very intermittently "squeeking/whining" blower motor, particularily on lower speed settings?

I think in the northern climates the issue is when dry snow is allowed to enter under the plenum cover through the hole in the wheel well. Now that VW closed the top vent holes in the plenum I think there is more loose dry snow allowed into the firewall area from the tires kicking it up in the wheel well. Over time this extra moisture causes the problems. There was a thread about fogging issues in the winter, especially with the new design plenum cover. I put a small cover over the wheel well holes to prevent noise transmission but I think it helps prevent this issue also. If you use a cover make sure it still allows the cowl drains to function, you don't want a huge rainstorm to fill the cowl and enter the fan area.

Just installed an update that vw service gave me, it involves replacing the right front inner fender and installing a new vent cover just under the windshield on the right side. The new inner fender covers the hole in the wheel well but leaves a gap for the water to run behind the inner fender. It should help, I have a 2012 and have just installed the 3rd fan you would think that the update would be free but the inner fender cost $88 and the vent cover was $8 fan cost $225. I quess the fans would last longer if you didn't drive in winter. Not pleased that the updates aren't covered buy vw.

I've had a similar problem: when I drive in heavy snow, the blower is frozen solid the next morning. I put a small space heater on the passenger floormat and after a couple of hours the fan will blow again.

Do you have the part numbers for the update kit? I'd love to install it before I burn out the fan!

Well 14+ days in dealership for turbo, oil pump and catilitic converter replacement and now back. Fan worked on way home last night from dealer. This am wife takes to work and no fan for the 40 min hey drive. Went out 15 minutes and videotaped for dealer and still no fan. 3 hours later went out to try one more time and now works in all settings. Either way taking it in can't have her stranded with frosted window. Temps near freezing today but -30C lows this weekend so need reliability.
