I placed a 1985 1.6 vw diesel in a shadow , when torquing the headbolts i noticed that one of them bottomed out way too soon . it seems like the block has a shallow treaded attach hole . what i did , was remove 1/4 " from the end of the bolt but perhaps next time i should add washers instead , any thoughts??

The "stretch" is between the last thread in the block and the bottom of the bolt head. By shortening the thread length you preserved the 'free' length in which this stretch takes place.
Had you 'lengthened' the distance from the top of the block to the underside of the bolt head you'd change (slow) the stretch rate. It'd still be tightened to the correct torque, but would not hold the head on as well when loaded by combustion pressure.

Dodge Shadow?
pictures?

does anyone know the correct procedure to re-tighten the 1.6 headbolts?
is it a 1/4 turn after 10,000 miles? or a re-torque to a specific limit?

Thanks all...I have a head gasket (maybe) leaking, and i wondered if maybe my headgasket needing snugging...
??
If I can get the correct re-tightening procedure, i can pop off the valve cover and have at it!(It's a bad leak)

If i had a head bolt that bottomed out too soon i would immediately pull the head off and check that hole for something in it, then i would blow it out but cover the engine block so dirt does not get in it.

If you have a leak, i doubt re-tightening is going to fix that.

But the procedure from my Haynes Repair Manual VW Rabbit Diesel 1977 thru 1984 is as follows: In 1981 there was a change of head bolts and different torque but the procedure is the same. Below is the torque for the later 1981 thru 1984 with the 12 point recess head bolts.

Initially torque to 30 ft-lb, then 44 ft-lb, then 55 ft lb. So initially you torque all bolts three times. Then using a breaker bar tighten 1/2 turn in correct sequence. Then start the engine and allow the engine oil get to at least 122 degrees F (50 C). Then you are supposed to tighten each bolt another 1/4 turn.
Then after 1000 miles the bolts must be tightened again and the engine can be either hot or cold, 1/4 turn again in one smooth movement. Then you are suppose to check and adjust the valve clearances.

I assume you know the sequence, every time the bolts are tightened you should always use the same sequence.

thanks for all the input , it is(barily) weeping oil at the gasket near the bolt in question , if it becomes neccesscary to replace the gasket , i will first check the depth ,and make adjustment to the bolt lenght .
