Head Unit or Amp

2005 Passat Wagon (BHW/5-spd conv, 03T). I keep in touch with the (2) ALH's I sold.
I have searched high and low to find a few threads with these symptoms, but no answers.

The factory stereo will play as long as I want at very low volumes, if I turn it up at all it will only play a few seconds until it quits.

I assume it’s the head unit but do not know 100%. Anyone know 100%?

It freezes up, cannot adjust volume, song, station, can’t ffwd a tape, does not go blank, just freezes.

I believe it’s standard as it does not say monsoon anywhere on the head unit.

I didn't think the standard systems had a separate amp. Mine is Monsoon and has an amp in the trunk on the bottom of the deck lid. Sounds like the head unit to me.

You jogged my memory, says Monsoon when I turn it on. Amp is on the LH side where the tire changing tools are and a couple other storage compartments.

Any one else experience these issues?

I could put in an aftermarket head unit, but I do enjoy the tape player as my mom has tons of hand me down tapes.

I know.......get with the times......

Have you tried seeing if there are any vcds errors?
I need to diagnose the problems with my radio on my wife's car as well..its not the exact issues, as it just never has any sound. I just haven't gotten it done.

I’ll scan again, but when I last checked, nothing showed up. I just did a whole vehicle scan, is there something else I should look/scan for in VCDS?

We got 3” of snow overnight, and still snowing so I won’t scan today, but will tomorrow as I have to drive me car.

Today is skiing with the wife and then Atari 7800 with my son. Priorities(y)

+1

I have not looked much at the Radio in VCDS as mine has been

Maybe try connecting to the radio with VCDS when it's locked up, or first then turn it up until it locks up.

You might also try searching over at PassatWorld as the radio is not specific to TDI.

Currently messing around in VCDS:
56-Radio (Control Module)
“Fault Codes” -02 (NONE FOUND)
Under Advanced Functions: “Output Tests - 03” I can select through each tweeter/woofer and I can turn the volume up as high as I want for as long as I want and it works.

as soon as I go leave the controller, my stereo will return to playing normally but will freeze up if I go near 1/3-1/2 way up. Then I can shut it off, turn it on, but will only allow me to turn it up maybe 2 notches and still freezes. Like it has a built in safety or it’s seeing an overload somewhere.

anyone see this before and find the solution? @oilhammer ...... I would think you have encountered this...?

thanks all
