So this is what I've gotten the surface to. I've used a carbide scraper, a .006 brass wire wheel then a piece of scotch brite against a 1" thick piece of ground steel as a sanding block. In two spots at opposite ends of the engine block just outside the fire ring I'm seeing some pitting which I'd like to eliminate but it is so fine it doesn't even catch my fingernail....at least not noticeably so. Thoughts??

Pics worked for me, but then again I live in southern NH, a couple of miles south of Dave. Maybe distances matter if you don't drive a TDI.

Dave, keep up the contributions; we all appreciate the incentive, motivation and stimulus to work on these old but truly rewarding to drive machines; and I know that it takes time out of your life to post these events with us. I hope that your engine comes together OK. Keep up posted. Kudos, B4 TDI brother.

The photos show for me now. Looks much better then when I did my head gasket. Mine is still together about 50,000 miles and counting.
