I was just thinking about something like that the other day. Is it just stuck into a Curt or similar hitch?

Currently none. Formerly: 2010 VW Jetta TDI 6M, 1993 Dodge Ram W250 Cummins 5M 4WD, 1990 VW Jetta Diesel 5M, 1986 VW Jetta Diesel 5M, 1980 VW Uabbit Diesel 4M. Currently driving 2018 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD.
This must certainly be well over the 200-pound limit VW specifies as a maximum tongue weight for any and all tow hitches on both Jetta and Golf. Have you noticed any deformation in those places where the hitch attaches to the chassis?

Good point, that certainly does look like it exceeds the weight capacity for sure. Over time I cannot imagine there would not be some wear on that.

Tested out one of these racks on my Jetta wagon...no way jose...sketchy as heck, too low to the ground, too much of a risk of the handle bar smashing through the hatch glass....returned the rack and am seeking out a small trailer!

They normally sell two sizes of rack. One for pickups/ 4wd and another for street cars/ hatch sedans. Looks like you got one for a high hitch like on a pick up/ 4wd.

Ones made for hatch/ sedans have the rack raised as the hitch is usually much lower to the ground and you can see the issue in your pics.

Looking at your 2nd pic I can see the square hitch is fixed above you bike rack. Most that I have see have the bike rack welded on top of the square hitch.

Try flipping your rack over 180 you should then get another 3.5-4in clearance

I'm hoping to do the same thing with my Golf. Did you upgrade your rear suspension to handle the weight?
The OP hasn't been seen here since 2018, doubt you'll see a reply from him.
You might look into getting a set of those air bags that go inside the springs to resolve any ride height issues while hauling the bike.
How big is your bike?
